Antique Victorian 18K Gold Diamond & Blue & White Enamel Polo Cap Ring

About the Item

An antique diamond and enamel ring in yellow gold, comprising one old cut diamond and eighteen rose cut diamonds, set in 18 karat yellow gold, and adorned with blue and white enamel, to a band of 18 karat yellow gold. This truly stunning ring is nothing like I have ever seen before. It is perfectly quirky and has been very sympathetically converted into a ring (likely from a stick pin). At the centre is a sparkling old cut diamond, which has been elegantly bezel set. Sets of 3 graduating rose cut diamonds create 6 stripes, which are interspersed in turn with cobalt blue enamel and white enamel panels. The peak of the cap is also inlaid with white enamel. The pinched shoulders of the ring lead to a plain, polished band of rosy gold. The ring is likely a polo cap or a jockey cap and would have probably been given as a prize or as a gift to an enthusiast or player/rider. The ring is in great condition, and the enamel is good condition with minimal loss, in-keeping with its age. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The head of the ring measures 18mm high, and 14mm wide. The band measures just over 2mm wide at the back. Principal diamond weight, estimated: 0.16ct Total diamond, estimated: 0.2ctw Gross weight: 6.34g Ring size: UK – O US – 7.25 EU – 55 mm Hallmarks: none, tests as 18 karat gold, circa 1880

Most antique rings were created by skilled artisans who meticulously handcrafted each piece. This level of craftsmanship allowed for intricate designs that were often time-consuming to produce. This includes filigree work, hand-chasing, granulation (tiny metal bead-work), and hand-piercing to create delicate openwork patterns. The emphasis on hand-made production is a hallmark of the era’s jewels. Antique rings were typically made from both gold and silver. The jewelers noticed that diamonds look whiter when set in white metal and not in yellow. The white gold was not invented back then yet and platinum was too hard for jewelry tools...
