About the Item
A gorgeous Art Deco black opal ring, made of platinum and featuring diamonds.
The opal displays a harlequin pattern, with vibrant patches of green and blue shifting across the gemstone. The opal is set in a bezel setting with four wide prongs and framed by a halo of old European and single cut diamonds. On two (east – west) prongs there are baguette cut diamonds that are set horizontally. The platinum band is slender and slightly tapers towards the back.
This black opal ring combines early 20th century diamond cutting styles and Art Deco geometrical look with a bold colored gemstone, emphasizing both structure and vivid color in its design.
This chic Art Deco ring is made of platinum (tested), and features an oval Australian Black Opal accented with diamonds. The black opal measures 17 x 12 x 5 millimeters and weighs 5.95 carats. The diamonds are Old European, single and transitional cuts, H-I color, VS clarity, total weight 1.00 carat. All weights are approximate and calculated by the formula.
The top of this Art Deco opal ring measures ¾” x 5/8” (2 x 1.8 cm).
The Art Deco ring weighs 6.5 grams, is size 6.75 and is resizable.
About Art Deco Jewelry:
Art Deco, an influential design style, emerged in the early 20th century, reaching its peak during the Jazz Age, in the 1920-1930s. Since then, Art Deco jewelry has remained highly appreciated for its strong geometric shapes, undeniable elegance, and chic.
The jewelry from this period reflects cultural changes of the time, mirroring the exuberance of the Roaring Twenties. For instance, square, triangular, and trapezoidal cuts were favored, reflecting a departure from the organic motifs of previous design eras. Art Deco jewelers embraced new materials and techniques Platinum, being the most popular metal during the Art Deco era, also contributed to the period jewelry popularity. At that time the Merensky-Reef, the world’s largest platinum deposit, was discovered in South Africa. The metal’s characteristics allowed it to create delicate yet durable designs.
The emphasis on symmetry and precision in Art Deco design reflected the influence of the machine age. Jewelry pieces were often precisely crafted, featuring symmetrical arrangements. Art Deco jewelry design often incorporated functional elements. Pieces frequently doubled as practical accessories, such as watches integrated into bracelets or brooches.
The Art Deco movement drew inspiration from various cultures, including ancient Egyptian, Asian, and African motifs. These influences are apparent in the use of symbols and patterns that added an eclectic flair to the jewelry.
Vintage Art Deco engagement rings are always in high demand. They have a perfectly balanced geometry and often feature Old European, and cushion cut diamonds. Black and white combos, such as diamond and black onyx, or black enamel create a dramatic effect.
About Opal Jewelry:
Opal is a captivating gemstone known for its unique play of color, where flashes of vibrant hues dance across the surface of the stone. This phenomenon, called opalescence, makes each opal one-of-a-kind. Composed of hydrated silica, opals are formed through a natural process involving water and sedimentary rock, resulting in a wide range of colors and patterns.
Opal has been treasured since ancient times, with early Romans considering it a symbol of hope and purity. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, opal jewelry became especially popular in Europe, often featured in ornate Victorian and Art Nouveau designs. Today, opal jewelry remains a timeless favorite, valued for its beauty and natural uniqueness.
Many renowned jewelry designers and luxury brands love incorporating opals into their creations, using the stone’s vivid colors to craft bold and artistic pieces. Designers like Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and Van Cleef & Arpels have showcased opals in high jewelry collections, celebrating the stone’s beauty.
Black opals are among the most sought-after varieties of opal jewelry, prized for their dark body tone that intensifies the gemstone’s play of color. Sourced mainly from Lightning Ridge in Australia, black opals display vivid flashes of colors, making them a great choice for fine jewelry. Black opal rings, necklaces, and earrings are especially popular among collectors and jewelry lovers who seek striking gemstones. Known for their rarity and vibrant color patterns, black opals are often featured in high-end designer pieces, making them a standout option for those seeking unique opal jewelry.
