About the Item

A cocktail ring designed by Baden & Foss. Beautiful cocktail ring created in New York City by Baden & Foss during the post war period, back in 1950. This ring was crafted in solid yellow and white gold of 14 karats with high polished finish and mount on top with one Australian opal. The opal is surrounded with eighteen well matched natural white colorless diamonds. Australian Opal Opal appears to have been first discovered in 1849 in Australia near the small town of Angaston in the territory of South Australia. Within a few decades, major deposits were found and exploited in several areas of the country. Like all fine things, gem opal is exceedingly rare. Much of the world's precious opal is mined in the harsh outback of Australia, where a unique combination of geological conditions permitted the formation of opal near the margins of an ancient inland sea. Country: New York City, United States. Period: Post-War, Mid-Century, 1950. Diamonds: Mount around in prongs settings, with 18 calibrated round brilliant cut diamonds, with a total weight of about 0.54 carats, white colorless F/G color, VS clarity. Opal: Mount in prongs settings, with 1 marquise cabochon cut (16 x 8 x 5 mm) Australian opal with a weight of about 3.63 carats. Birthstone: Opal for the month of October. Weight: 5.6 Grams, (3.60 Dwt). Size: 6.5 and may be easily resized up or down on special request. Measurements: 20 mm by 14 mm (0.79 x 055 Inches) and raise 8 mm over the finger. Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark, the mark for the assay and warranty of the .585/.999 gold and signed as follows, "B&F 14KT". Collateral: This Baden & Foss ring is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box. Condition: The overall condition of this Baden & Foss ring is excellent. Besides the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. The 19 gemstones are secured in the settings. This ring has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity. The opal is natural, not treated and with partial white matrix in the under bottom. Diamonds: Mounted around the center gemstone in flush settings, with 32 old European rose cut natural diamonds, with a combined weight of 1.06 carats. Birthstone: Opal for the month of October. Hallmarks: No marks, the ring was electronically tested for 14 karats gold, 9 karats gold and .800 silver on top. Victorian Jewelry This era was one of the most influenced and influential periods of antique jewelry. This period is defined by the British monarch, in this case, Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the Empress of India, years 1837-1901. There are 3 sub-periods within this era. First, the early, Romantic period, which is soaked in traditions, natural motifs in gold and silver, clear stones only being worn during the day and colored gems by night. The second being the Grand or mourning period, which coincides with the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert the consort, who died in December of 1861. This period included large, dark, somber, dramatic jewelry, with a lot of black onyx, jet wood, amethyst, garnet and gold. This lasted until 1880's, when the aesthetic period of jewelry began. The Late or third stage of the Victorian period, use more complex and feminine motifs, returning to the natural, including many floral and celestial designs, with more decadent gemstones, lasting until the turn of the century. The Victorian era of jewelry includes many movements found in other countries, including revivals such as the Etruscan the Roman and the Egyptian as well as the Art Nouveau, Liberty style and Arts and Crafts design movements which lead into the beginning of the twentieth century. Opal Opal is one of the world's most popular gemstones and the birthstone for the month of October. A nice precious opal can flash every color of the spectrum with an intensity and quality of color that surpasses the fire of diamond. The best opals command prices per carat that rival expensive diamonds...
