About the Item

Andre Charles Boulle is the 17th century French artist and craftsman credited with developing the technique of inlaying precious metals into tortoiseshell. The craft was brought to England by the Huguenots when they were expelled from France in the 17th Century. Pique reached its zenith during the reign of Queen Victoria but it is an art form that has been lost today. This antique ring exhibits a form of pique decoration known as "pique pose", in which strips of sheet metal are inlaid into the heated shell to produce ribbons of gold or silver and geometric or floral patterns. Pique has a different look from modern tortoise shell jewelry; only one species of tortoise was allowed, the hawksbill turtle; the craftsmen were quite finicky about the quality of the shell and consequently, pique jewelry and objects have a richer look and smoother feel. This is surely a ring for the individual who desires to "wear" an antique hand crafted, one of a kind form of art that makes a significant statement on one's hand. Size 5.75 and sadly, not sizeable!
