About the Item

An sculptural cocktail ring designed by Jean Mahie. A very rare sculptural cocktail ring, created in Paris France by the artist, sculptor and goldsmith Jean Mahie, back in the late 1970's. The sculptural imposing cocktail ring has been carefully crafted in solid rich yellow gold of 22 karats and the entire surfaces were finished with textured, chiseled and hammered patterns. It is embellished ion top with one earth mined natural translucent blue-green tourmaline. Rings from Mahie, with color gemstones like this, are extremely rare and are mostly one of a kind pieces created by special commissions. Tourmaline: Mount in the center in a four-prongs setting, with 1 emerald cut (15 x 13 x 8 mm) of a natural blue-green tourmaline of about 13.25 carats. Weight: 40.2 grams (25.77 Dwt). Size: 7 and can be easily resized on request. Measurements: 23 mm by 26 mm (0.95 x 0.95 Inches) and raise 10 mm over the finger. Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks, the national mark of the head of the eagle for the assay and warranty of the 22kt gold, the maker's mark JM inside a lozange cartouche associated to the atelier of Jean Mahie and signed in full, "JEAN MAHIE ". JEAN MAHIE Jean Mahie, is the result of a wonderfully symbiotic and fruitful partnership between Jacline Mazard and her father-in-law Jean-Marie Mazard. They first began combining their artistic talents in 1969, working from a studio in Mouans-Sartoux in the South of France, and launched their jewelry line the following year. Neither was formally trained and both preferred to work with 22ct gold in order to realize their unique style that embodied naturalistic form, motifs and techniques. Everything they made was entirely hand crafted with Jacline often drawing inspiration from her memories of growing up near the ancient ruins of Carthage in Tunisia. Their bold, imaginative, exotic pieces in richly hued yellow gold fitted perfectly with the bohemian fashions of the late 60s and early 1970s. Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier showed an early interest in their work with both firms retailing their pieces. Jacline recalls, “Louis Arpels, 82 years old at the time, saw our work and convinced us to sell our productions to Van Cleef and Arpels. Cartier followed as well. So in November 1970, we had our creations in their windows, Place Vendôme and rue de la Paix in Paris, with our name shown.” (With thanks from Hancock), Literature: Jean Mahie, Bronze And Gold Jean Mahie, Sculpteurs forgerons D'Or, Edition Monelle Hayot, Paris 1980.
