About the Item

The cabochon emerald is one of the oldest and most coveted gemstones, used since ancient Egypt and included in jewels for the pharaohs. To say this ring has majestic and monumental proportions like a mountain or pyramid in an ancient verdant landscape would not be an overstatement. The Contemporary Cabochon Emerald Diamond Cocktail Bombé Ring, made in the 21st century, is crafted in 18K white gold and features a cabochon green emerald with an estimated weight of 19.22 carats. The impressive stone is accompanied by reports from C. Dunaigre and Gemresearch Swisslab (GRS) stating that it is a natural beryl type emerald of green color, Colombian origin with minor clarity enhancement. The Dunaigre report refers to the stone as a cushion shape cabochon and the GRS report goes so far as to call it a sugarloaf cushion shape cabochon. A cushion shape cabochon is square or rectangular with rounded corners, a domed squarish top, and flat bottom. The main points of focus for cabochons are color, texture, and luster, rather than brilliance. This means that making a cabochon highlights specific features of the gemstone. A sugarloaf cabochon is named for Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, which rises dramatically out of the Atlantic like a monument, somewhat like this ring. Both the name of the mountain and the stone refer to shape rather than location, signifying their resemblance to the traditional Brazilian concentrated refined loaf sugar. The emerald does show evidence of delicate creases at the four corners like a pyramid, which is the distinctive mark of a sugarloaf cabochon. The stone is held at the four corners with split prongs which emphasize the luster and unique play of light created by the sugarloaf shape. The emerald is set in a raised domed bombé design embellished with 100 pavé-set round brilliant cut diamonds across the broad shank that continue to the band which is highly polished and left unadorned. The emerald is further accented on either side with two striking lines of graduated baguette cut diamonds set horizontally which ladder up to the centerpiece like an Ancient Mayan pyramid. The round brilliant-cut diamonds have an estimated weight of 2.63 carats total. The 10 graduated baguette diamonds—which are custom-cut and set very closely together within two channel settings. Size US 9, can be resized albeit with limitations. Center Colombian emerald 19.22 carats total, accompanied with C Dunaigre and GRS certificates. 100 round brilliant diamonds weighing approx. 2.63 carats total. 10 baguette-cut diamonds weighing approx. 0.99 carats. Total diamond weight approx. 3.62 carats. Overall weight approx. 9.35 grams, made in 18k white gold.
