A Roman intaglio gold hardstone ring
About the Item
A Roman intaglio gold hardstone ring, the oval shaped rose-quartz measuring 1.4 x 1.1cm, deep engraved with the profile of an Emperor wearing a laurel wreath, possibly Nero, Roman-set in landscape position to a hollow yellow gold mount with closed back, and tapering shoulders and shank, circa 1st century AD, measuring approximately 2.7 x 1.4cm, finger size L-N (the ring is not round), gross weight 10 grams.
This Roman ring s in very good condition with signs of wear consistent with its age. Unmarked, tested as 22ct gold.
A remarkable Roman intaglio ring from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Sculptural and lustrous, this ring is rendered in hypnotic yellow gold while the stunning intaglio depicting a Roman emperor is engraved in rose quartz. Intaglio, a technique where the design is carved into a gemstone and leaves a hollow impression surrounded by an untouched background, dates back to antiquity. Traditionally worn by men, these rings used to symbolise power, social status or, as this stunning example, political inclination. Today this unique ring can still be worn as a fashionable and timeless accessory, and a marvellous nod to ancient culture.

Roman Intaglio Carnelian Ring
Located in New Orleans, LA
Exceptionally rare and fashioned in the 2nd or 3rd century CE, the carved carnelian gemstone at the center of this ring hails from the Roman Empire. Displaying a rich red color and carved with the image of two Roman deities with a child, the creation exudes the glory of late antiquity. Each taking a classical contrapposto stance, the leftmost god appears crowned with laurels and grasping a staff, while the other appears nude. At their feet, an infant stretches his arms upward toward the divine figures. The crimson carnelian, more than a millennia-old, is set into a later 14K gold ring setting...

Ancient Roman Gold Mens Signet Ring Conical Intaglio Ring Gem Carving
Located in London, GB
A superb ancient Roman agate intaglio ring. The high-karat gold signet ring is set with an engraved gemstone, known as an ‘intaglio’. It dates from between the 2nd to 3rd century AD and is a fine example of a Romano-British intaglio.
The conical-shaped agate gemstone displays various bands of colour ranging from honey brown to greyish-blue. The engraving depicts the bust of a man wearing a helmet, possibly winged which would depict Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, financial gain and communication. In Roman times, people would wear rings with the intaglio of Mercury in hope that the he would protect them and bless them with good financial fortune in their lives.
A number of referenced examples of similar ancient Roman conical shaped intaglios reside in notable museums all across the world, from the British Museum to the Louvre. A page with these examples and their sources can be found in the final photos of the listing. Similar examples can also be found in the extensive Alice and Louis Koch collection (items: 234, 235, 241, 301). Again see final images for reference.
The gold ring mount is of D-shaped cross-section and a hollow 22K gold construction. The ring has a fantastic smooth silk-like texture when worn. It remains in good overall condition and the intaglio is very secure in the mount. The gold mount dates to the late 18th to early 19th century, and the shape is inspired by ancient Roman ring...
