About the Item

A late 18th century carnelian intaglio mounted as a ring, the intaglio carved after the 1772 medal of Garrick by Lewis Pingo, 1743-1830, a cast of which is in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1906,1103.386); the head size measuring 22.3 by 24.9 mm, gross weight 22.1 grams. This antique intaglio is in very good condition for its age. The gold mount unmarked, tested as 15ct gold. A handsome late 18th century carnelian intaglio mounted as a ring, the intaglio carved after the 1772 medal of Garrick by Lewis Pingo. David Garrick was one of the most prominent actors and theatre mangers of his time. Manny of his reforms to theatre are still in place in today such as stage lighting being hidden from the audience. He also transformed audience behaviour and etiquette which led Samuel Johnson to remark "his profession made him rich and he made his profession respectable." This historic ring stickpin comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and would be the perfect gift to any patron of the theatre. The finger size of most of our rings can be adjusted and our workshop will be happy to do this free of charge. If you do not know your finger size, please request us to post you a finger measure. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
