About the Item

A remarkable artifact of classical antiquity, this Hellenistic ring displays a finely carved intaglio in the likeness of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Rendered in rich green jade nephrite—a material exceptionally rare in classical antiquity due to its hardness and difficulty to carve—the profile image captures Aphrodite with refined facial features and softly rounded contours. Her hair, parted and swept back in elegant parallel strands, is held by a delicate diadem, an emblem of divine status. The green stone is set into an 18K yellow gold ring. Intaglio carving, a hallmark of ancient lapidary craftsmanship, was a prized skill throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. Originating in Mesopotamia and refined in Greece and Rome, the art of engraving gemstones required tremendous technical finesse and artistic vision. The use of jade in this ring underscores the extraordinary skill of the artist. This ring offers a wearable link to that ancient heritage and is accompanied by an authentication statement. Circa 200–100 BCE

Roman Intaglio Carnelian Ring
Located in New Orleans, LA
Exceptionally rare and fashioned in the 2nd or 3rd century CE, the carved carnelian gemstone at the center of this ring hails from the Roman Empire. Displaying a rich red color and carved with the image of two Roman deities with a child, the creation exudes the glory of late antiquity. Each taking a classical contrapposto stance, the leftmost god appears crowned with laurels and grasping a staff, while the other appears nude. At their feet, an infant stretches his arms upward toward the divine figures. The crimson carnelian, more than a millennia-old, is set into a later 14K gold ring setting...

Ancient Roman Carved Emerald Brooch
Located in New Orleans, LA
An ancient Roman emerald carved with the features of a man's face is the center stone of this 19th-century brooch. The art of gem carving takes years to learn and master, and emeralds are notoriously difficult to carve. They polish well, but the artist must be extremely careful not to break the stone or carve away too much of the gem during the process. To find a carved emerald dating to antiquity, when gem carving was in its infancy, is an exceptional rarity. The museum-quality, Roman-period stone is displayed in an impeccably crafted Victorian-era silver and silver gilt setting. Emeralds, diamonds and rubies complement the carved emerald, while a single Baroque pearl...
