About the Item
This exquisite 18KT Gold ring features an authentic Roman intaglio dating back to the 1st-2nd Century AD, showcasing the iconic Pegasus, the mythical winged horse, on its front. Crafted by Roman artisans, this piece reflects the deep influence of Greek mythology on Roman culture, where gods, heroes, and mythical creatures of Greek origin were widely embraced and reimagined.
A feature that makes this ring truly unique is its revolving design; the onyx stone can be gently rotated within its setting, adding an interactive and dynamic element to the piece. The back of the stone is beautifully rounded, allowing for smooth rotation and a comfortable fit on the finger. The onyx itself, with its deep, rich black color and polished finish, creates a striking contrast with the metal, enhancing its elegance and mystery.
The Romans revered Pegasus—known as Pegasos (Πήγασος) in Greek—as a symbol of divine inspiration and power. Originating in Greek myth, Pegasus was born of Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa, and became a symbol of both heroism and untamed freedom. The Roman interpretation of Pegasus maintained these heroic and divine associations. Notably, Roman mythology often blended Greek gods with their own beliefs, adapting deities such as Zeus to Jupiter, Poseidon to Neptune, and Athena to Minerva; in this way, Pegasus’ mythological role was preserved and appreciated as an icon of courage and divinity.
The tale of Pegasus and the Greek hero Bellerophon—who captured the winged horse with the aid of Athena and Poseidon—also held meaning for the Romans. They admired Bellerophon’s bravery as he mounted Pegasus to conquer the fearsome Chimera. This bond between Pegasus and Bellerophon represented the Roman virtues of valor and perseverance, though the myth concludes with a reminder of humility: Bellerophon’s attempt to ascend to Mount Olympus ended in a fall, after which Zeus immortalized Pegasus as a constellation.
In Roman art, Pegasus became a recurring motif, embodying ideals of noble strength and celestial grace.
