About the Item

This bronze ring is attributable to the Byzantine manufacture of the IV-VII century, in which the upper rectangular shape is repeated along the stem of the ring where the geometric form is repeated with affixed crosses, to embellish the mount. In the centre, however, there is a precious engraving depicting Saints Peter and Paul, key figures in the history of the Church of the first century: Peter is considered the first pope in history, while Paul was a central figure for the spread of Christianity, in fact, both preached the Gospel and died martyrs under the emperor Nerone. This ring is a testimony of the importance attributed to these two figures and, in addition indicates the owner’s membership in a particular cult, but it is a jewel that was worn surely for its intrinsic protective virtues.
