About the Item

Period: 2nd century A.D. Ring size: 9 Top size: 14.5 mm Weight: 9 gr This Roman-era nicolo, dating back to the 2nd century, is characterized by a refined ancient frame in 22-carat gold. The stem is distinguished by its granulated decoration, while the upper part of the frame surrounding the stone has a grooved workmanship. The stone is engraved with a butterfly, an iconography rare in the ancient panorama but of great symbolic value: in classical culture, it represented the cycle of life and, more specifically, symbolized the soul. This meaning is confirmed by Greek etymology, in which the terms "butterfly" and "soul" are both expressed by the word ψυχή (psyche), perceived as a vital breath.
