About the Item

The silver ring, from the Tudor era, can be dated to the seventeenth century when the signet rings were both a symbol of the owner’s social status and extremely personal objects used as tools for authenticating messages and documents. Each representation of these signets, in fact, is unique and personalized with identifying elements of the owner. In this case the seal has an articulated decoration with two lateral climbing lions that enclose in the center a small bird placed on a support, all surmounted by a crown and enclosed within a decorative border. This ring can be compared to a seal kept at the British Museum (1928,0507.1).
