Antique Victorian 1880s 18K Gold Blue Enamel & 0.65ct Old Mine Cut Diamond Ring
About the Item
An antique yellow gold, enamel, and diamond ring, comprising one large old mine cut diamond and blue enamel decoration, set in 18 karat yellow gold, to a band of 18 karat yellow gold.
This striking ring is unlike any other ring I have come across, and is truly mesmerising. At the centre, is a large, old mine cut diamond, which is cushion in shape. The diamond is exquisitely sparkly, bright, white, and has good clarity. The diamond has plenty of character, with delicious, chunky facets, synonymous with old cut diamonds, that creates their unique sparkle. The diamond is held within a buttercup-like claw setting, known as a belcher setting, which allows plenty of light to filter through. The setting has been enamelled within, with cobalt blue enamel (a favourite in the Victorian era for its opulent colour) giving the setting of the ring a wonderful depth. Around the setting, cobalt blue enamel has been further applied in a striking and unusual design. The broad shoulders of the ring taper, revealing two kite shaped motifs, which would have originally held blue enamel, which has worn away with love and wear, however when the ring is on the finger, these sections cannot be seen. The substantial band is of plain, polished yellow gold, and the buttery gold feels soft to the touch. Aside from the enamel loss at the sides of the ring, and a small loss near to the setting, the ring is in good condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The setting of the ring measures 10.5mm high, and 10mm wide. The band measures 3mm wide at the back.
