C1820 Fine Citrine Ring with Intaglio of Doves at Ravenna and Repousse of Roses
About the Item
This citrine ring with its stunning intaglio of 2 doves drinking from a shallow basin, is copied from the famous mosaic of Ravenna, a city renowned for its breathtaking Byzantine mosaics which was the seat of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, and later, Byzantine Italy. A photo of the mosaic is shown in the images.
This Regency period ring with its breathtaking band of repousse roses is a minor work of art.
Repousse is quite time consuming so the technique is typically employed for larger, more important pieces. It is a way of creating beautiful forms on the gold-work without having a to expend a huge outlay of gold.
The Christian allegory of doves drinking at the well represents the spiritual nourishment of the holy water, with the doves symbolizing the faithful. The Bible reference is from John 4:14.
