About the Item

This antique conversion piece started life as a regional ‘Croix Badine’ (Badine cross) dating to the late 18th century, the most emblematic jewel of the Catalan part of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The badine cross is a regional cross mounted with rose cut and foiled Perpignan garnets. The word badine is an old French word which means “to move gently” and refers to the way the cross is articulated allowing the lower part to move freely. Le Grenat de Perpignan (Perpignan garnet) used in these crosses has been mined in the northern Catalan mountains since the 17th century. The use of these garnets in jewellery is more than just decorative, the stones represent a strong symbol of regional identity and were also historically believed to cure blood disorders and excessive anger! The garnets are multifaceted and convex with a special foiling technique to accentuate their brilliance. This particular garnet was well-selected to be used as a standalone piece for this ring as it displays a rich cranberry-scarlet lustre that reveals a glowing fire when touched by sunlight. Beautifully steeped in tradition, these exceptional gemstones epitomised the French region of Languedoc-Roussillon as well as Northern Catalonia in the 18th century. Roussillon, historically the northernmost part of the Catalan counties attached to Spain, was annexed to the kingdom of France under Louis XIV in the 17th century. However even today, people in the region of Roussillon speak Catalan as well as French. Perpignan garnets are no longer mined, meaning that only antique pieces remain… so if you are looking for a historically significant statement piece to add to your collection, this ring is perfect!  The conversion from Badine cross to ring likely took place towards the end of the 19th century due to changing tastes in fashion. The ring band carries a French control mark for a minimum of 750 / 18K gold, both the ring band and head test as 21K gold. As the January birthstone is set above red-tinted foil, the ring should not be immersed in water, as the foil will be discoloured.  UK size N 1/2, US size 7, 2.67g, bezel measures 13mm x 10mm

Royal 19th Century Siam Diamond and Ruby Ring
Located in London, GB
A rare 19th century princely gold cluster ring made in Siam (Thailand), circa 1860.This gorgeous ruby and diamond ring was intricately crafted in high-karat gold, by the goldsmiths of the royal Siam court in the 19th century. It is a fine example of the lavish adornment worn by participants in royal and aristocratic life-cycle ceremonies in the courts of Bangkok. Aside from ceremonial use, they were also occasionally given as gifts to important visitors or other aristocratic families. There was a huge expansion in the number of royals in 19th century Siam which stemmed from Kings Mongkut (Rama IV) and Chulalongkorn (Rama V) being highly polygamous. They had a joint total of 124 wives and 159 royal children, each requiring their own ceremonial regalia and princely jewels. As a result, Bangkok became home to some incredibly skilled goldsmiths in this period and the sheer number of jewellery required has meant that today princely jewels like this one can very occasionally be found in the open market, particularly in Europe following the relocation of the Thai royal family to Switzerland and France in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The ring features a row of cabochon rubies horizontally aligned, surrounded by a sea of rose cut diamonds. All of the stones are in rubover settings within a web of hexagonal honeycomb frames. The band is decorated with pierced and deeply chased scrollwork motifs, typical of Siam jewellery...

Scarce Antique Georgian Pink Ruby and Diamond Floral Cluster Ring c 1800 Italian
Located in London, GB
This unusual antique Georgian era floral ruby and diamond cluster ring dating to around 1800 was probably made in Italy. In the middle of the ring head lies a collet set and foil-backed bright pink ruby. It is surrounded by a sea of 20 flat-cut and closely set diamonds in a flower head cluster style. The raised ruby setting appears to fixed to the ring with a cut-down rivet which is visible on the smooth underside of the bezel. The rosy hued gold ridged shoulders taper down to the back of the shank. This elegant ring sits fairly flat on the finger to allow for frequent wear and is without doubt a particularly unusual and scarce example of its kind. UK size L 1/2, US size 6 4.72g, band tests as 14K gold, bezel tests as silver, ring head measures 14mm x 13mm. Each diamond measures between 1mm and 3mm. Approx 0.3ct...
