About the Item

Witches, soothsayers, rootworkers, cunning folk and other practitioners of divination or fortune-telling have been staring into the souls of cabochon-cut gems for thousands of years. One gazes into the gemstone as if it were a crystal ball, fixing one's eyes on the features within it while the mind becomes entirely blank until, at last, a vision is "seen." While I suspect this elegant Victorian ring was not made with fortune-telling in mind, it would most certainly do the trick. The approximately 12-carat (19 mm x 13 mm x 7.70 mm) amethyst stone is mesmerizing: a lush purple with swirls of inclusions inside the stone. Normally we like gemstones to be "eye clean" or even flawless, but sometimes the inclusions can be unique (horsetail in demantoid garnet) or simply so beautiful, as in this piece, that it is the "inner world" of the stone that makes the gem so magnificent. This ring loves having its picture taken and not all rings do. The setting is unique; neither prong nor bezel but rather a kind of decorative hybrid of the two. Tiny natural (uncultured) pearls are securely set into the "nest" that holds the purple gem, and the 14k yellow gold mount has a lovely buttery color and very soft patina. It's a perfect ring for your index finger or really any finger that deserves the attention. Even a man could wear this ring if he can make peace with wearing pearls. Look at old portraits of English kings and you will see an ocean's worth of pearls. Dating from approximately 1910, this bold amethyst ring is perfect for anybody who wants to know what tomorrow has in store before tomorrow arrives. Currently a size 9-1/2, it could be resized by your local jeweler.
