About the Item

A stunning, domed oval, rose-cut natural zircon gemstone is bezel-set within a satin-finished 22k yellow gold mounting, perched atop a band of thick, brushed sterling silver. The Zircon has a closed-back setting, much like rings from the Georgian ara. Rose-cut stones were also enormously popular during the Georgian era, With its crisp lines and modern aesthetic, this brilliant ring pays homage to its Georgian predecessors. Though the gem is colorless like a fine diamond, because it is backed with gold, when viewed from the front it appears to contain a golden fire. The stone measures approximately 10mm x 7,5mm x 3.8mm and weighs approximately 2.5 carats, as measured in the mounting. Zircon is a gemstone with several unique propertierss. Not only does it have a very high "refractive index", so it has a lot of sparkle and brilliance. Zircon also has a higher dispersion than diamond. Dispersion is a gemstone's ability to split white light into its component rainbow of colors. Diamonds have a dispersion of 0.044, while zircon's dispersion is higher, at 0.058-0.066, causing more "fire" or colored flashes. This ring was created by San Francisco jeweler, Sam Woehrmann, who credits his "lifelong interests in gemstones and mathematics" as his inspiration to pursue a life creating fine bespoke jewels. This ring is currently a size 6.25. We do not offer resizing, but your jeweler could easily resize this ring for you.

Diamond Stanhope Ring in Aluminum
Located in Southbury, CT
A rare aluminum and diamind stanhope ring. A "Stanhope lens" is a tiny single-lens microscope invented in the late 18th century by Eton-educated Charles Stanhope, the 3rd Earl Stanhope. The unique construction of the lens requires that the object to be magnified be near or in direct contact with the lens. Photography, which had been invented several decades prior to the Stanhope lens, was ever-evolving, and something called "microphotographs" became a thing in the mid-1800s. These tiny photographs could not be seen without a microscope. The Victorians, dressed as they were in multiple layers of social decorum, etiquette, and clothing, loved microphotographs because they were cunning, and the subject matter could be naughty —filthy naughty, even— yet remain invisible to anyone without a microscope. The Stanhope lens came along at just the right time and was eagerly adopted; incorporated into everything from crucifixes to sewing scissors. And, of course, set into rings. Stanhope rings...
