Jocelyn Burton Sterling Silver Tapered Tumbler or Mug with Cowrie Shell

About the Item

A wonderful tumbler or cup by Jocelyn Burton. In sterling silver with an applied figural cowrie shell, tapered sides and gilt interior. Jocelyn Burton was an enormously important English female silvermith and goldsmith. She executed numerous commissions to the Queen and was given the high honor of making the first strike on the first English piece of platinum in the London Assay Office in 1973. She had a storied career and was recognized with awards and accolades for her excellent work for roughly four decades. Simply an amazing piece of silversmithing! Provenance: From the estate of Philip Refson, who owned the Charles de Temple jewelry shop on Jermyn St, London. Refson was a private client (and personal friend) of Burton's and often commissioned pieces directly from her. Date: 1982 Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition with a noticeable dent to the side, some light nicks and edge wear, some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: Jocelyn Burton Marks: Struck with hallmarks for JB, sterling, H for 1982 and London Measurements: Height: ca. 5 1/4 in. Diameter: ca. 2 3/4 in. Weight: ca. 7 1/2 troy oz.
