About the Item

A fine George II sterling silver coffee pot with a wooden handle, floral repousse details and a crest with rubbed maker's mark likely for William Skeen. The coffee pot is very much in the Rococo taste of the early to mid 18th Century with asymmetrical swags and floral repousse covering almost the entire body of the piece. There are London hallmarks to the neck of the pot dating its manufacture to 1757 along with a rubbed maker's mark, likely for William Skeen. To the front of the coffee pot there is an engraved crest which could be for the Alexander family seen in the 1905 edition of Fairbairn's Book of Crests. The pot is in lovely condition with the normal abrasions and wear associated with a piece that is 250 years old. A beautifully ornate example of English silver from the reign of George II. Marked - assay marks for London 1757 & a rubbed hallmark likely for William Skeen Measures - 24.5cm H x 19cm W Total weight of piece - 677.5 grams

This rather elegant coffee pot was likely made in the United States during the second half of the 18th Century. Prior to restoration work in 2022 the underside of the pot had remnants of a hallmark 'NH', allowing us to attribute the piece to early American silversmith Nathaniel Helme who was working in South Kingston, Rhode Island between 1761 and 1789. The piece stands on a square footing and has a timber handle...
