About the Item

An Antique silver ink stand, comprising of three cut glass pots, silver removable lids, with beaded and moulded rim, placed within circular pierced borders with floral motifs, balustrade shaped pen holder, silver shield tray with beaded rim and rocaille cartouche, claw feet, gross weight 8.5oz, bearing the sponsor marks for WM Plummer, London 1778. This wonderful George III Ink Stand comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. This ink stand is complete with three pots, for ink, sand for drying, and extra nibs, as well as a pen holder. All the components feature silver lids and cut-glass bodies, set on an ornate decorated shield tray with claw feet. Inkstands became a household necessity in the eighteenth century, and this fine example by silversmith William Plummer shows the decorative as well as functional purpose that these objects served.
