ART NOUVEAU 1900 Plique à Jour Enamel Watch In 18Kt Gold With Rose Cuts Diamonds

About the Item

Art nouveau enamel Plique à Jour watch This is a very fine miniature brooch-pendant-watch, created in Genève Switzerland during the Art Nouveau period, between 1890-1900. The fabulous watch was crafted in a round shape with sculpted floriated motifs in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with little accents in silver for the settings of the twenty-one rose-cuts diamonds It is embellished with green glass enamel made up in the difficult technique of the Plique à Jour. The brooch is fitted with a hook to hang the little pocket watch and at the reverse with a hinged bar to wear the suite as a brooch. Plique à jour Is a French term, meaning "letting in daylight". Is a very difficult vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time consumption (up to 4 months per item), with a high failure rate. The technique is similar to that of cloisonné, but using a temporary backing that after firing is dissolved by acid or rubbed away. A different technique relies solely on surface tension, for smaller areas. In Japan the technique is known as shotai-jippo (shotai shippo), and is found from the 19th century. Movement: Mechanical hand-wingding, 15 jewels with Dial: Round, round porcelain with gold dots, blue Arabic numerals and golden hands, with secondary dial for the seconds. Mount with convex glass. Restored. Case: Round in 18kt yellow gold, enameled and diamonds set in silver. Movable ring on top. Diamonds: Mounted in inlaid silver setting, with 21 European rose-cut diamonds, with a total of about 0.63 carats, H/I color, SI clarity. Weight: Total of 39.4 Grams, (25.30 Dwt). Measurements: 77 mm by 28 mm by 13 mm (3.03 x 1.10 x 0.51 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with Swiss marks, the French import marks of the swan, the reference six-digits serial numbers and signed as follow, "SWISS 504820". Collateral: This Plique Au Jour pocket watch is accompanied by the original retailer's presentation jewelry box. Condition: The overall condition of this Plique Au Jour pocket watch is very good. Besides the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. The 21 diamonds are secured in the settings. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and the authenticity. SPANISH 1900 Barcelona Art Nouveau Enameled Bracelet In Sterling & 18Kt Gold
Located in Miami, FL
A rare art-nouveau aesthetic bracelet made in Barcelona. This is a very rare highly decorated bracelet, created in Barcelona Spain during the art-nouveau period, back in the 1900. This Catalonian bracelet was designed with fantastic Noucentisme organic and floral patterns with a reminiscence to the architect Antoni Gaudi. It was masterfully crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver and parts in 18 karats gold, with texture, hammered, and chiseled finishes. The fantasy floriated elements are embellished with applications of blue, green, and peach glass enamels. Fitted with a concealed push boxed lock. This Bracelet The Spanish modernist designers are of the highest quality. The silver work is solid and very substantial. The Barcelona silversmiths were well known for combining sterling silver with gold in their jewelry pieces. This bracelet is a wonderful example with beautiful links adorned with 18 Karat Yellow Gold and enamels. The bracelet has a wonderful nature- inspired motif resembling the architect Antoni Gaudi. This is one of the finest modernist bracelets we have handle. When is worn, it is a superb statement of design, modernist ideals, and the finest craftsmanship. The bracelet is magnificent with no trace of wear. Noucentisme From within the furnace of Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, grew an art movement in the early 20th century that influenced painters, writers, architects, garden designers — and jewelers. The movement, called Noucentisme, arose as a reaction to an earlier artistic period known as Modernisme, which was associated with modernist movements throughout Europe. Noucentisme reflected the Catalan aesthetic -which is, of course, in opposition to Spanish and European influences- and turned to the region’s spiritual roots. Noucentisme has been poetically described as “a term without outlines, almost indefinable,” that pretends to gather “the palpitations of time.” The painter Joaquín Sunyer described the characteristics of Noucentisme in a broad way: Imaginative art, Intellectualism, Art for art’s sake Order, perfection, and beauty. One of the movement’s founders, a lawyer and artist named Eugeni D’Ors, believed that humankind wished to enter a new period of “morality” and that the ideal motto for a new society would be “the work well done.” Noucentisme jewelry is muscular yet sensual, which might also describe Catalan nationalism. Artistically, the form espouses clear geometrical structures, harmony of all the parts and work that demonstrates careful design as opposed to impulsiveness. The materials often used in Noucentisme jewelry are rose cut diamonds, synthetic spinel, marcasite, synthetic sapphires, aquamarine and turquoise; and silver, gold, and combinations of the two, with details of platinum. Enamels are used as highlights. The pieces feature hammered surfaces with spirals and stepped figures. Rectangular forms are preferred to ovals. Famous Noucentisme artists were writers -especially of poetry- architects, sculptors, and painters, such; Ramón Sunyer I Clará, (1869-1963), Jaume Mercadé i Queralt, (1887-1967), Manolo Hugué, (1872-1945) and the jewelers Fuset y Grau...

We will service it for you as part of the purchase price before it is shipped out to you. This will delay shipping for a few days of course. It is rare that we find watches with their original box and papers that are this old. This unique pendant was presented as an award for shooting contest. The watch comes with original documentation as well discussing the event which was a woman's shooting contest. The watch is in excellent original condition and can actually be worn and counted on all the time. This is a truly unique item. The company was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, a Swiss watchmaker. He was also the brother of renowned biologist Louis Agassiz. Agassiz started the company with two partners, lawyers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. The company's original name was Raiguel Jeune & Cie. In 1846, Raigeul and Morel retired from the watch industry, leaving Agassiz as sole company head. Several years later, Agassiz brought in his bright, enterprising nephew, trained economist Ernest Francillon, into the business. Francillon was the mastermind behind several impressive innovations that would distinguish the company from its competitors. In 1880, Francillon trademarked the Longines name and its winged hourglass logo. The winged hourglass is a symbol of precision and timekeeping, and it has become one of the most recognizable logos in the watch industry. In 1912, Longines became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. The company has held this position ever since, and it has been involved in every Olympic Games since then. Longines has also been the official timekeeper of many other major sporting events, including the World Championships in Athletics, the Formula One World Championship, and the America's Cup. In 1931, Longines invented the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch. This watch was designed specifically for Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The watch featured a special bezel that allowed Lindbergh to calculate his longitude. In my own personal collection, I have the Longines Caliber 13 ZN Chronograph that Commander Richard Byrd took to Antarctica in 1928. It was purchased at the time from Abercrombie and Fitch in New York along with all the other equipment used on the expedition, it still runs well and keeps good, even after 100 years. In the 1980’s I was privileged to view their “collection” in their vaults. It was not open to the public, but a contact arranged it. There were examples of all the finest pocket and wristwatches they had ever produced. This included all the pieces that had received navigational and chronometer ratings. They were not even arranged for presentation; they were merely in drawers. I was shown the collection by their renowned “springer.” I have forgotten his name, but he was responsible for adjusting the watches to win the chronometer ratings. He was probably 80 years old at the time. Interestingly but not surprisingly he could only speak to me about adjusting the hairspring but not about the watch in general. This is something that is not uncommon in the watch world. A craftsman will only know about the part of the watch that they are responsible for. When I produced my own watch in Geneva many years ago, I realized that the dial maker and case maker and other associated craftsmen knew almost nothing about what each other did. This seemed odd to me, but it is that way. Lastly, our family jewelry store in Los Angeles was an official Longines retailer so I can speak from personal experience that Longines is an exceptional watch company regarding their service and dependability. They are also famous for the “Ultra Chron...
