About the Item

Swiss pocket watch designed by Jean-Moïse Badollet & Cie. Gorgeous medium lady demi-hunter pocket-watch, created in Geneva Switzerland at the watchmaker's workshop of Jean-Moïse Badollet & Cie, back in the 1886. Its a demi-hunter meaning that there is a window hole with a glass that allows for a quick view of the time. This pocket watch was retailed in France in the 19th century and was crafted with three hinged lids in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with high polished finish and embellished with applications of black, gold and grisaille enamels. The complete case is work with applied glossy glass enamel. The main lid is decorated in the Grisaille enamel technique, accented with gold applications showing the portrait in high relief of a noble lady dressed in classic ropes facing to the left. The reverse back lid is decorated with Roman numerals in gold which are encircling the glass window, all framed in high relief with gray-white garlands made up in enamel. It is fitted on top with a movable ring to wear in a chain-necklace, a fob or in a dangling brooch (Included). Dial: Round in black enamel, analog with white Arabic numerals and gold simple hands, all inside a white dotted circle. In perfect condition, no cracks. Case: Demi-hunter with 10 mm glass, made in 18 Karats yellow gold, numbered 856778. Enameled in grisaille and black. Signed J. M. Badollet & Co. Geneva. Movement: Swiss 26mm (5/0s), mechanical hand winding. Diamonds: Mount in flush incrusted settings, with 4 European rose cut diamond of 0.08 carat, white colorless G color, SI clarity. Weight: All parts combined are 42.50 Grams, (27.24 Dwt). Measurements: 47 mm by 33 mm by 9 mm (1.85 x 1.30 x 0.35 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with Swiss marks; the maker's mark, the mark for the assay of the gold, the case serial numbers and signed two times with different techniques, (Machine stamped), "J. M. BADOLLET & CO. GENEVA 18KT 85678". (In cursive letters engraved), "J. M. BADOLLET & CO. No. 85678 GENEVE OLIVE BELDEN 1886". The name of Olive Belden should be the retailer's brand name in France. J. M. Badollet & Co. The Badollet were a family of excellent Swiss watchmakers through several generations, from the 17th century until the 20th century. A branch worked in Paris from 1712 to 1872, there were also branches in England and a Paul Badollet worked in New York around 1798. Jean Jacques Badollet (1756-1829) founded the company J. J. Badollet & Cie in Geneva in 1779. From 1828 to 1854, Jean Moise Badollet (1811-1854) was the sole owner and the company initially operated under the name "J. M. Badollet", and from 1837 under "J.M. Badollet & Cie". This name remained even after Jean Moise death: his successor was called Jean Marc Badollet. Around 1890 the company name was changed back to "J. J. Badollet". The “Charmilles” pocket watch based on Potter patents was manufactured during this time. This venture failed in 1895 and the company was liquidated in 1896. Another year later, Colomb & Balmer took over the Geneva facilities and also retained the J.J. trademarks. Badollet. Then members of the Badollet family seem to have played a role again, as Gustave Badollet (1855-1924) was the last of the clan to run the company. In 1923 the name was "Geneva Watch Co., Successor to J.J. Badollet, micrometers" and the factory continued to operate under this name two years later. As a note Badollet made watches under their own name, and are also known to have made watches for Edward Dent (one of the finest English watchmakers of his day) to Dent's specifications, under Dent's name. In the 1840s Badollet actually opened a workshop in Soho, London for the purpose of making watches for Dent. By the 1870s, the company was renowned for its high-end products and received several awards from the Geneva Observatory and the “Société des Arts”, as well as in the international exhibitions in Vienna (1873) and Chicago in 1893. The firm won the first three Geneva timing competitions and continued its path and became the face of ultimate Swiss watchmaking, particularly Genevan throughout the world. Grisaille This is a kind of painting executed entirely in shades of grey or of another neutral greyish or black colour. It is particularly used in large decorative schemes in imitation of sculptures and classical motifs or in high relief. 'Gris' is a French term for gray. Paintings in a brown scale are referred to as brunaille and paintings in a green scale are referred to as verdaille. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box. Note: This is a piece with over 100 years old, for collectors purpose. The movement need cleaning and calibration Condition: The overall condition of this watch is very good. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold or the enamel. All parts are secured in the settings. SWISS 2000-315" The Edwardian era Like the Georgian and Victorian eras before it, derives its name from the reign of the English King, Edward VII (1901-1910). Edwardian jewelry is known for representing femininity while incorporating a lot of the color white. Think diamonds, pearls and white metals like platinum and white gold. Diamonds often had an Old Mine or European cut and sapphires were a popular choice for a pop of color. They tended to be made from platinum and diamonds – the more, the merrier – and used fashionable, intricate techniques such as filigree and millegrain. Edwardian rings are works of art and best worn alone or alongside a simple wedding band. Mill graining, a new decorative technique made possible by the use of platinum, is featured often on Edwardian jewelry. Its border of delicate balls and ridges surrounding a gemstone or on the knife sharp edges of a design served to give jewelry a softer, lighter look. Guilloché This technique is used in fine jewelry to enhance the appearance of brooches, rings and pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue.
