About the Item
Le Roy et Fils. A Rare 18ct Rose Gold Quarter Repeater Keywind Cylinder Openface Pocket Watch, C1820.
Dial: The superb Silver dial with engine turning to the centre of the dial with Roman numerals and outer minute track. The original rose gold coloured Breguet moon hands complimenting the watch beautifully.
Case: The 18ct Rose Gold case with fine engine turning to the back cover with a vacant circle. The inner gilt metal cover is signed LEROY & FILS watchmaker to the king Paris. It is also numbered. The winding and hand setting holes are in the back cover, showing which way to wind and setting the hands. The cases are all French hallmarked and numbered. The pendant has the repeater plunger which pushes down to operate the repeater mechanism.
Movement: The fine rare and cylinder escapement with fast, slow regulation flat balance and visible hammers and plunger to operate the repeater. The watch chimes the hours and quarters clearly with the hammers hitting two gongs. The movement works very well. The movement is unsigned which was common in French watches from this period.
This is a fine example of a chiming watch from an illustrious and famous watchmaker from this period. Le Roy et fils was a French company making clocks and watches. The company was founded in 1785 by Basile Charles le Roy (1765–1839), who later passed it on to his son, Charles-Louis Le Roy. Le Roy et Fils became successful and survived the turmoils of the French Revolution. It became clockmaker to Napoleon I, his sister Princess Pauline, Mme Mere and the King of Westphalia. After the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, it was a warrant holder for the Duke of Bourbon.This watch would make a fine addition to one's collection. Dial: A superb 18ct gold dial with raised Roman gold numerals outer dotted minute track and engine turned centre. The original blued steel Breguet moon hands complimenting the dial beautifully.
Case: The excellent heavy rose gold case English hallmarked for London 1818 with engine turned back cover. The inner cover numbered and signed Des Granges Late Recordon Cockspur Street Charing Cross London. The case maker was Thomas Hardy, a very famouse case maker of his time. The top of the pendant lifts up and turns then is depressed to make the watch chime.
Movement: The gilt metal finished movement with a flat arm balance, slow fast regulation Duplex escapement hanging barrel and the wheels for the repeating works visible. The hammers and gongs are also visable. The watch chimes the hours and quarters clearly.
This watch is indeed rare and important as it is double signed by Des Granges late Recordon who was the main agent in London for Abraham Louis Breguet. It also has a Duplex escapement which was used to achieve a higher accuracy of time keeping. Des Granges was a pupil of Josiah Emery...
