1930 GRUEN Vintage Techni - Quadron (Rolex Prince) Watch, 14K Gold-Filled - Doctor's Watch
Very Fine Timepiece - Collectible & Original - 1 Year Warranty
Without question the most iconic Art Deco Rolex is the Prince, universally celebrated for its unsurpassed quality and elegant style. Appropriately named, it was the perfect accompaniment for prominent doctor's, business financiers, or any man with discriminating personal taste in timepieces.
Made not only in the same factory as the Rolex Prince, but on the very same production lines was a virtually identical wristwatch, the Gruen Techni-Quadron. Our photos show a comparison to the case and movement of a Prince.
For a number of years after the company's founding, Rolex had no manufacturing capability of its own so the company received its movements from Aegler, a superb Swiss watch manufacturer partially owned by Gruen, Rolex, and the Aegler family. Because of the large number of Aegler shares held by Rolex and the Gruen brothers, the full name of the manufacturer for a time was actually Aegler, Societe Anonyme, Fabrique des Montres Rolex and Gruen Guild A, translated "Aegler, Limited Company, Manufacturer of Watches for Rolex and Gruen Guild A". The Aegler family used their workshop to produce a large number of movements for Rolex, most notably for the Prince series, as well as for this special wristwatch sold by Gruen.
"Why was the identical watch sold as both a Rolex and a Gruen?" The answer is quite simple: when the watch hit the market in 1928, Rolex was still a London-based company selling almost exclusively in the British Empire and Europe. They had no distribution facilities in the United States, then as now, one of the largest markets in the world. Aegler had invented the watch and put time and money into it. They wanted to recoup their investment from as large a market as possible, and so Gruen was given the 'franchise' for the United States. These were the only markets anywhere in the world worth selling an expensive watch to." - Explanation courtesy of Hess & Dowling, The Best of Time - Rolex Wristwatches, an Unauthorized History.
The rare Gruen Techni-Quadron featured in today's offering is a striking original example of one of these fine wristwatches.
While Techni-Quadron's are all uncommon, this one has a rare case with factory done pebble texturing on the twelve and six sides of the bezel. It is very cool with a memorably distinctive look.
Here are a few of its features:
* Possessing a long, stylish case and an ultra-high quality mechanism, these wristwatches set a standard of the day for refinement and accuracy, performing very well in European chronometer tests
* Powered by the legendary caliber 877 mechanism, manufactured by the Aegler family in Biel, Switzerland, used in these Techni-Quadron and Rolex's Prince line of watches
* Extremely high quality movement design featuring an oversized winding barrel and balance wheel. By placing this two mechanisms at opposite ends of the movement the watch achieves incredible levels of accuracy and carries a longer power reserve, enabling it to run longer and more accurately on each wind
* Curved, long and elegant case make it appropriate for both casual and dress wear. This example has extremely cool original pebble texturing.
* Larger, peripheral seconds dial insures the hour and minute hands never obstruct the view of the seconds, perfect for taking a patient's pulse and for technical uses
* Striking Art Deco original dial with a slight two-tone color for the center of both dials
Its thickly plated 14K white gold filled case is in near mint. Much of the time these cases have been polished so that the gold has worn through. That's not the case with this one, which shows very little signs of previous polishing and no gold wear.
Its iconic duo-dial face, which has a wonderful Art Deco style, is original and untouched.
One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it. Note the numerous hand-etched markings inside the case back showing a very extensive service history.
We have also timed it on a machine that simulates it being worn on the wrist. It is keeping accurate time.
For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function, a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
This is an opportunity to own an exciting historical timepiece on par with coveted Rolex Prince watches.

1991 TUDOR (Rolex) PRINCE OYSTERDATE Vintage Mens Ref. 74000 Watch - Stainless Steel
Rolex Case, Crown & Bracelet - Gorgeous Original Condition - 1 Year Warranty
More and more collectors are becoming acquainted with watches from Rolex's Tudor brand, creations which have become increasingly more collectible. Watches in the Tudor line, apart from the fact that they utilize ebauche movements, are similar to those of Rolex in design and construction.
When Rolex launched the Tudor brand in 1945, they strongly intended that the public perception of its quality had to equal that of Rolex. To achieve this lofty aim, until the mid-1990's, Tudor watches featured Rolex cases and crowns, and, until 1971, Rolex bracelets.
An advertisement in Britain's Horological Journal in vintage times stated that Tudor's were, "Manufactured under strict Rolex supervision and bear the Rolex label of guarantee."
The Prince Oysterdate comes across with a feeling of familiarity to many watch collectors because of its connection to Rolex. While those connections have faded a bit in recent years, this 74000 was birthed at a time when the two brands were bonded together a lot more closely than they are today.
Patterned after the Rolex Oysterdate, one of the company's staple models, it is thinner and of course a bit more affordable than its Rolex sibling. However, it has two more desirable features than a Rolex Oysterdate - this Prince Oysterdate has a movement that is automatic, unlike the Rolex, and it has semi quick-setting, also something that Rolex Oysterdate's didn't have.
This 74000, which plays sort of a transitional role in what was Tudor's growing independence from Rolex, is indicative of the period when the two giant watch brands functioned as best friends.
Today's auction showcases this Connoisseur of Time Certified Pre-Owned Tudor Prince Oysterdate in gorgeous original condition.
The watch itself has all of its original parts.
Its original Rolex Oyster case presents in gorgeous mint condition with only very slight signs of previous polishing. Its case presents nearly like new.
Its untouched original dial is mint with beautifully toned luminous. The original luminous in its hands perfectly matches the pips.
As I mentioned, until 1971 Rolex fitted Tudor watches with true Rolex bracelets - the exact same ones that came with their Rolex branded watches. Though this watch would have come with a Tudor bracelet, it has previously been upgraded to a full Rolex bracelet made in 1971, the last year that a Rolex bracelet would have been correct to fit on a Tudor watch.
A Master Watchmaker has freshly overhauled the watch, and it has also been examined by our Master Watchmaker who worked for an authorized Rolex dealership and was given training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center.
It is running exceptionally strong and true, keeping time better than many new Tudors and Rolexes in our testing recording position.
For the finishing touch, we have meticulously detailed it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function, a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.

We really like its cool mixed Roman and baton dial.
Patterned after the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, one of the company's staple and respected models, it possessed the same features and conception - it was thinner and a bit more affordable than its Rolex sibling.
Our Oyster Prince has all of its original parts. Its original Rolex Oyster case presents in mint condition with only slight signs of previous polishing.
Please note that the area that looks discolored underneath one of the top lugs is just a shadow. The case presents as mint.
Its untouched original dial is mint.
One of our Master Watchmakers, who used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealer and was given special training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center to be an authorized Rolex watchmaker, has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing any overly worn components with genuine Rolex parts, installing a new mainspring, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $695 value).
For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile lizard strap and aftermarket Rolex...

LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT
This great looking Art Deco Watch was produced by legendary house of Gruen. The watch is dependable and easy to service. In the 1930's, we became Gruen agents in Los Angeles California. Gruen was a great company to work with because they had large collection, great styling, they were innovative and offered great service to their customers. It is sad that they could not, like so many other American Watch Companies withstand the Swiss and Japanese marketing.
Founded in 1894 by Dietrich Gruen. The company had their American base in Cincinnati, Ohio, and it produced a wide variety of watches, including pocket watches, wristwatches, and chronographs. Gruen watches were

The present wristwatch is one of the exceedingly rare examples of a "doctor's" watch produced by Gruen in the late 1920s, Advertised as a timepiece for technicians and "radio and mechanical engineers"-anyone who needed to measure time in seconds, the calibre 877 movements were manufactured by Aegler in Bienne who also supplied movements to Rolex for their "Prince" model. Aegler, a very close neighbour to Gruen's Precision Factory, shared ownership during a time with both Gruen and Rolex, the full name of the company being "Aegler, Société Anonyme, Fabrique des Montres Rolex & Gruen Guild...
