This truly unique watch was produced for the legendary house of J.W. Benson based in London. This piece is hand made and we have just given it a factory quality service by our finest watchmaker and it is actually a dependable watch that can be worn and counted on as well. The workmanship is the finest available from its time. The Kiln Fired Enamel dial is in flawless condition and the hands and crown are original as well.
This is certainly an oversized watch and may have originally been a pocket watch. However, we have seen other examples from the time like this one, so it may have been originally a wrist watch. It was a common style in the Russian market at the time.
The British house of J.W. Benson was a prominent name in watchmaking and jewelry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1847 by brothers James William and Samuel Suckley Benson, the company started as a watchmaker and goldsmith shop in London. They not only crafted their own timepieces but also imported and retailed luxury items. J.W. Benson rose to become one of the most respected watchmakers in London. Their success was fueled by high-quality craftsmanship, a move into early wristwatches, and prestigious clientele. Queen Victoria and other royals granted them Royal Warrants, solidifying their reputation as a brand of excellence.
