Art Deco Wrist Watches

ART DECO STYLE

Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.

The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.

However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)

While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.

Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.

A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

Bugatti By Mido 1930 Art Deco Radiator Shape Enamel Wrist Watch 14Kt Yellow Gold
Located in Miami, FL
Radiator wrist watch designed by Bugatti. An extremely rare and unusual deco wristwatch, created in Switzerland by Mido for the Bugatti company. Made during the art deco period in the shape of a automobile radiator grill, back in the 1930. Crafted in solid yellow gold of 14 karats with the logo of Bugatti which is embellished with applications of red white and black enamel and the letters EB, for Ettore Bugatti. Fitted with a hinged snap lid. History Between the mid-1920s and the mid-1930s, Mido produced less than a hundred watches for the very famous Bugatti automobile brand. The notable feature of these pieces was their case shaped like the iconic radiator grille on the famous car. They were specially ordered by Mr. Ettore Bugatti to the Mido manufacture, often offered to his best pilots, mechanics and to his family. Bolstered by this success, Mido developed its famous watches for motorists in 1925 and 1926. The brand filed a patent for its watch cases and for some dials inspired by the finest vehicles of the era. These included pocket and pendant watches, all of which mirrored the radiators from a large number of car manufacturers, including: Alfa Romeo, Benz, Bugatti (or EB, for Ettore Bugatti), Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroën, De Dion-Bouton, Delage, Farman, Fiat, Ford, Hispano-Suiza, Lancia, Lincoln, Opel, Peugeot, Pic-Pic, Rolls-Royce and Talbot. Records Mido records confirm that the first of the four series of Bugatti watches...

Rare 1947 Palladium / Diamond Dial 19 Jewel
Located in Raleigh, NC
Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner, where one can find the most unusual timepieces that are sure to have stories that will never be revealed. Everyone looks at your watch and it represents who you are, your values and your personal style. Jewelry isn’t really my thing, but I’ve always got my eye on people’s watches. It is a quiet personal statement. My apologies for the long listing. I am laying the foundation for you to understand what I have listed. This is a “Palladium Cased – Diamond Dial” Hamilton from 1947. This is not your ordinary watch. Let me make one thing clear. Hamilton never sanctioned the reacasing of Hamilton movements with diamond dials and different alloys. It was done anyway. There are many varieties of Hamilton Diamond Dials with solid rose gold, solid yellow gold , solid platinum and of coursed solid palladium. You can find many platinum and gold examples, yet it is more difficult to find a Palladium example. Look at this offering very closely. If you are discerning and are looking for a distinctive watch that can be passed down generations, look no further. A Rare Palladium Hidden Lug Hamilton, with a diamond dial that is matched with Hamilton’s finest quality wristwatch movement, it doesn’t get better than that! We call that “Watch” Nirvana. This watch has lived 76 beautiful years and is looking for another place to call home! This watch is outfitted with one of Hamilton’s finest quality movements, the venerable 982M (Medallion), read below for a more detailed explanation. It is a mechanical masterpiece The 982M is virtually identical to the 982 movement, except it is finished to a higher degree of tolerances and decoration. On the back of the 982M you can see the gold "medallion" representing that this is a special movement. Considering most people would never look at the back of the watch movement - the fact that Hamilton put so much attention to detail in the fine finish work of their movements is a testament to their premier quality. Under the dial is a 19 jewel 982 Medallion movement. The 982M was introduced in 1940 and replaced the high grade 982 movement in solid gold models. The 982 and 982M are virtually identical other than the additional damascening and gold (orangish) highlights on the movement back. Hamilton touted the 982M as the height of accuracy noting its cap jewels on the escape wheel and Elinvar (“Elasticity Invariable”) hairspring. Additionally, Hamilton promoted the 982M movement as having increased durability, which predated the incabloc shock absorbing mechanism from Switzerland. Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Year 1947 Grade 982M Size 14/0 Jewels 19 Type Hunting Settings Pendant Production From 1940 Quantity 110131 Remarks Gold Medallion Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Did you know that Palladium is more rare than Platinum. As of this listing Platinum is $941.00 and Palladium is $1094…. Platinum and Palladium Differences The main differences between Platinum vs Palladium are: Platinum is its own metal, whereas palladium is part of the platinum group metals Palladium is more rare, whereas platinum engagement rings are easier to find Platinum is a heavier metal, whereas palladium rings are more lightweight Palladium jewelry often used as men’s wedding band, whereas platinum rings are often used as engagement rings All jewelers will work on platinum jewelry, but not every jeweler will work on palladium, they don’t have the expereince Palladium is more rare than platinum. But like platinum, it’s not normally found in its own deposits but in other ore bearing mines. Most palladium comes from nickel-copper mines. It was discovered by William Hyde Wollastonin 1803. The word "palladium" is derived from the name Pallos. Pallos was an asteroid discovered around this time. Most palladium is mined in Russia but it’s also found in the United States, Finland, Australia, Canada, and Zimbabwe. Because of its rarity, palladium rings aren’t easy to find. They’re less common than platinum rings. Even though palladium jewelry has been around for quite some time, people didn’t really start picking up on it within the last 20 years. My speculation is that it's largely due to the internet. Besides jewelry, palladium is used in metal instruments like dental tools and electronics. Over the years, the company’s craftsmanship has never wavered, and they continue to present new ideas of what a wristwatch can be. Offering sharp, sophisticated designs and accurate timekeeping, each Hamilton watch boasts a classic look combined with cutting-edge technology. Rooted in Military History In the early 1900s, Hamilton was named the official wristwatch supplier for the American Armed Forces. The watches were worn on the wrists of servicemen in both World Wars and all other military operations that the US entered over the last hundred years. 928: After the Yankees won the world series, the Hamilton Watch Company announced the Yankee watch, establishing it as a pioneer in watch design. The brand helped America keep up with the energy of a new lifestyle. Cutting-edge Hamilton designs, including the Yankee and the Piping Rock, symbolized the independent spirit of the day. 1930: Hamilton watches continued to embody the soaring spirit of the ‘30s, as the world turned its attention to the skies with the start of commercial aviation. Soon after, Hamilton was named the official timepiece of popular industry leaders, including Eastern, TWC and Northwest. World War II 1940: During WWII, Hamilton stopped producing watches for consumers and began developing new timepieces exclusively for military purposes. Nearly one million Hamilton military...

1918 Art Deco Waltham 18 Karat White Gold with Inlayed Cobalt Blue Enamel
Located in Raleigh, NC
This treasure is a first. It is extraordinary. No, that is not good enough. It is a “Magical Treasure” from a well known and playful era in American History. WW1 just ended in November of 1918, we were celebrating the victory and life was just beginning to open to new adventures., not knowing that financial catastrophe was lurking 10 years away. In all the years I have sold Art Deco, 1910 to mid 1930’s I have never had this one before. I acquired it in a small obscure auction in Germany. I would love to know how it ended up in Germany. I would suspect that a wealthy customer commissioned it, traditional American Jewelers work in 14 karat gold, European Jewelers worked in 18 karat gold. This is special, the condition for 106 years young is remarkable. The blue inlayed cobalt is superb, well done and intact. The watch has been band polished to being out the stunning luster that gold is so aptly known for. The swing hinges work perfectly. The collective condition I can not understate, impeccable. This is what I would call a needle in the haystack. I have completed the following restoration New old stock crystal Original crown adjusted Hand Polished front of case Hand Polished back of case Dial was professionally refinished to its original status Full comprehensive mechanical service Brand new 16 MM reptile band, see pic for type of critter The watch has female spring bars, not male, this was often a design element on sold gold watches...

Gruen Gold Filled Rare Ristside Art Deco Watch 1950 with Original Strap
Located in Long Beach, CA
FACTORY / HOUSE: Gruen Watch Company STYLE / REFERENCE: Ristside or Batwing METAL / MATERIAL: Yellow Gold-Filled CIRCA / YEAR: 1950 DIMENSIONS / SIZE: 23mm Length X 47mm Width MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 17 Jewels / Caliber 440 DIAL / HANDS: Original Silvered with Gilt Numerals / Gilt Leaf Hands ATTACHMENT / LENGTH: Original Strap Pig Skin Leather, 15mm / Regular Length WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement This is a "vault find" watch, it has been locked up for nearly 50 years, which means it needs a service. We will give it a factory quality service by our finest watchmaker as part of the purchase price before it is shipped out to you. This will delay shipping for a few days of course. LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This great looking Art Deco Watch is called the Ristside, it was produced by the legendary house of Gruen. The watch has been in our collection for nearly 50 years and it appears to be New Old Stock, as it is still fitted with its original Pig Skin Leather Strap. The strap is too dried out to actually use however (we can make you an exact one). We will supply it with a modern strap that will fit the original buckle. This watch is dependable and easy to service. In the 1930's, we became Gruen agents in Los Angeles, California. Gruen was a great company to work with because they had a large collection, great styling, they were innovative and offered great service to their customers. It is sad that they could not, like so many other American Watch Companies, withstand the Swiss and Japanese marketing. Founded in 1894 by Dietrich Gruen. The company had their American base in Cincinnati, Ohio, and it produced a wide variety of watches, including pocket watches, wristwatches, and chronographs. Gruen watches were known for their high quality and stylish designs, and they were popular with consumers for many years. In the 1920s, Gruen was one of the largest watch manufacturers in the United States. The company employed over 1,500 people and produced over 1 million...
