Leviathan of the Depths: The Sperm Whale in 18th Century Scientific Art
Located in Langweer, NL
The illustration features the species labeled as "Physeter microcephalus Linn.," historically referred to with this name but now known commonly as the sperm whale. This depiction, given its accuracy and detail, was likely part of an educational or scientific series aimed at documenting various marine species.
Description of the Illustration
The sperm whale is depicted with notable attention to its distinct body shape and features, such as the large, block-shaped head which is characteristic of the species. The coloration is muted, reflecting the typical dark grey to black hues of the sperm whale.
The background includes a detailed portrayal of a rocky underwater seascape with algae and other marine plants, suggesting the deep ocean habitats where these whales are typically found. The surface and spray around the whale add a dynamic element, capturing the moment of the whale at or near the surface.
This hand-colored engraving combines precise line work with subtle coloring, a technique that enhances the scientific utility of the piece while also providing aesthetic appeal.
Description:
Venture into the mysterious world of the deep sea with this striking 18th to 19th-century illustration of the sperm whale, historically referred to as Physeter microcephalus. This piece is from the distinguished series "Die Säugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur, mit Beschreibungen," known for its precise and detailed natural history illustrations.
This entry aims to highlight the illustration's value as a work of art and a piece of scientific heritage, appealing to a broad audience interested in natural history, marine biology, and antique scientific illustrations...

Antique Hand Carved Phoenix & Dragon w. Large Mirror Side Table Entry Hall Stand
By Gabriel Viardot
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare large and extremely sculptural wall table with marble inlay and beveled mirror.
If you are appreciative of rare and sculptural antiques then this large mirror / side table could be exactly what you are looking for. The quality and the patina of the large, fighting phoenix bird and dragon frame is second to none and for it to be in such good condition is truly amazing. It takes a special craftsman and artist to create such a piece, the type that you simply don't find anymore in this day and age. Because of the subject matter and the great quality, the first name that comes to mind would be that of master sculptor Gabriel Viardot. However, Viardot virtually made all of his dragon sculptures in the Chinoiserie style and this piece is clearly more European. In terms of the quality of the carvings, whomever created this unique piece of furniture certainly was no less artistic or skilled as Viardot, because this piece really is among the best you will ever see. The way in which this hand carved wooden phoenix is holding the shield-like beveled mirror in its claws and the way the dragon seems to try to fend off the enormous and fierce phoenix is both dramatic and impressive at the same time and it will never seize to amaze you or anyone visiting. Especially when you see the detailed carvings and the true size of this work of beauty in real life, you will be stunned. By the way, we learned that in imperial China, the dragon and the phoenix were respectively associated with the Emperor and the Empress...

Enormous 25.2Ø Hand Carved Antique Alabaster Floral Pendant / Chandelier 1910s
Located in Lisse, NL
Top class chandelier with an extra large, hand carved alabaster shade.
Thanks to its extra large size and great condition this alabaster chandelier is one of the best alabaster chandeliers that we have ever seen or sold. This antique and entirely hand-carved alabaster chandelier will light up your days and evenings in a way that no modern fixture ever could. Anyone who has ever seen one in real life knows exactly what we are talking about. For this stunning, four light specimen they clearly used the perfect alabaster rock, because this unique shade comes with numerous and evenly divided black veins. That combined with the whiter veins and patches that have formed in this mineral stone over a period of thousands of years makes it truly special.
We have several interior designer clients who are looking for these largest of alabaster chandeliers and they know that finding one over 25 inches in diameter is like the proverbial needle in the haystack. This not only is one of the largest (in diameter) antique alabaster pendants that we have ever had the pleasure of offering, it also is one of the deepest/highest. However, what takes this rare size chandelier to a level of its own are the scrolling leaf and flower patterns that are deeply and sharply hand carved all around the body. This level of workmanship was rare, even in the early 1900s and since this light would have cost a small fortune in those days, you can rest assure that only the best artisan would have been allowed to do these (exceptional) carvings.
