16th Century Spanish or Italian Baroque Wrought Iron Nails and Furniture Mounts
Located in Stamford, CT
Group of 16th century (or earlier, possibly Gothic) Spanish or Italian wrought iron furniture mounts. These hand-wrought bosses and nails show incredible workmanship. These would have been used to decorate - and to structurally hold together an early chest or casket. The four geometric bosses beautifully made, eight ounces each without the nail! The nails are works of art in themselves, with their heavy geometric heads.
Also two round bosses with the nail integral to the piece, one a mushroom form, the other like a parasol. And a single hand-wrought double sided nail. Great group of early iron.
Provenance: Frances Pratt, Writer, Artist, Collector. New York City.
Approximate sizes:
4 bosses 4.625 inches square 11.75 cm
Round bosses 3 inches diameter the larger 2.5 the smaller 7.6/ 6.35 cm
4.5 in high 11.4 cm
5 nails...

Two 19th Century Spanish Colonial Brass Slipper Stirrups
Located in Stamford, CT
Two great examples of 18th century Spanish Colonial slipper stirrups. Not a pair, each similar yet different. One is brass with a lovely floral decoration, the other a rare copper type with a simple incised design. Both with a wonderful patina that only comes with real age and use. These definitely put in some serious miles. Possibly used in battle, or just to protect the rider from bramble. Imagine what these pieces of history may have witnessed. Unique gift for the equestrian or collector of horse memorabilia...

Pair 19th Century Spanish Colonial Brass Slipper Stirrups
Located in Stamford, CT
Pair of 19th century, or earlier, Spanish Colonial brass slipper stirrups. These slipper stirrups, cast in bronze, mimic in metal the shape and decoration of a traditional leather boot. The rope design on the edge copies the sewing of the inside leather lining found on some other examples. The high quality of the metal casting is a direct inheritance of the metalworking skills displayed by Peruvian native populations before Spanish conquest.
Introduced to South America by the Spanish in the 16th century, horses soon became an important element in the lives of many local populations, of both colonial and native origin. Because horses were highly valued, owners would dress them with beautiful and elaborate tack, especially during festivals or other celebrations. Closed stirrups, or regular stirrups covered with a leather hood...

17th Century Italian Bronze Horse Bit Boss
Located in Stamford, CT
Italian Baroque raised round bronze boss with spiral decorated dome framed by a border with arabesques. These hat-shape bit bosses, probably inspired by Ancient shield bosses excavated at the time, were very popular in Italy in the 16th and the early 17th century.
Bit bosses were ornamental elements decorating both sides of a horse bit. The Metropolitan Museum has several examples of this type of bit boss in their collection. I have added a photo of a curb bit from the Met's collection showing how the bit boss was used as decoration on either side.
Ex collection: Piero Tozzi Piero Vito Tozzi was an antiquarian, artist, restorer, professor and art dealer who had galleries in New York and Florence. Tozzi specialized in Italian decorative arts, sculpture and paintings. Tozzi’s collection included, among other items, Fra Filippo Lippi...
