Carlo Zauli Italian Artist Abstract Ceramic Sculpture Signed Zauli
By Carlo Zauli
Located in Chicago, IL
Ceramic sculpture by Carlo Zauli from the series "Sphere" done in the circa 1970s. Stoneware and very abstract. Influences of Lucio Fontana are apparent. Exhibited large scale installations during Milan Design Week 2013. Carlo Zauli is indisputably considered one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century. After having won the main awards in ceramics in the fifties, the early sixties saw him evolve towards a markedly sculptural interpretation of his Craft. In these years he developed his own artistic language, imbued with informal atmospheres intertwined with a harmonious but disruptive "naturalness": these are the years of growing international success. From 1958, the year in which the great high-reliefs were made for the Baghdad palace and the Kuwait State Printing Office, he saw his fame grow continually, up to the end of the seventies and eighties, throughout Europe, Japan , North America, where he realizes exhibitions and placed work permanently. Carlo Zauli was born in 1926 in Faenza, where he died in 2002. Instead of ornate platters and decorative vases, his work seemed to have emerged from the earth itself, with organic curves, jagged edges, cracks and fissures that reflected the artist’s keen connection with nature. It was this passion for the natural world that made his work revered in Japan. Zauli first showed in the Japan as well in 1964 with the International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramic Art that toured several top museums. At the beginning of 1960s, Carlo Zauli enters an artistic period in which he could be defined 'a sculptor of vases.' He subjects his vases to a progressive process of geometrical synthesis that, combined with a sort of abnormal growth, turns them into true sculptures. His studio receives frequent visits from Arnaldo and Giò Pomodoro, Giuseppe Spagnulo...

Yongjin Han, Untitled, Sculpture in Pink Granite, United States
By Yongjin Han
Located in New York, NY
Yongjin Han was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1934. After the Korean War—in which he fought, lying about his age in order to enlist—he was one of six students admitted to the sculpture program at the Seoul National University. At the time of his enrollment little of his native city remained intact; nonetheless, he had never felt more responsible to his work, firm in the conviction that artistic expression is every bit as essential to life and human nature as eating, drinking, or breathing. One of Han’s teachers was Kim Chong Yung, a pioneer of Korean abstract sculpture, and by the time of his graduation he had adopted the abstraction that had seized both Europe and the United States several years before. . In 1967 he relocated to the USA, where he studied at Dartmouth and Columbia. Over the course of his long career the artist returned to Korea with frequency and made extended stays in Japan and Europe. Trips to Korea signified something more than mere homesickness: Han’s work, though made largely in America, remained grounded in his rich cultural heritage. Korea rests on a bedrock of granite, and freestanding sculpture produced of the stone has for centuries demarcated sites of historical and religious significance. Han’s sculpture bridges this past with modernity. Richard A. Born, former Curator at the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, has said that Han “brought Korea’s tradition of direct stone carving out of figuration into a refined, non-objective abstraction.” For his part, Han put very little stock in designations; his focus, instead, was on the stone itself. His pieces explore a certain harmonization with nature. Han, when describing his work, said, "As stone has been around since the beginning of time, it has much to teach us if we care to slow down and listen." He believed that each stone has its own history, character, and energy and that his task was to draw out these inherently spiritual qualities. He described his process as a “dialogue” with his material: "The stone tells me it has an itch in a certain spot, so I scratch it—and we both feel better!" Han worked alone and with manual tools, and the process is arduous. Carving stone this way takes time, and, what’s more, required great force—yet Han’s sculptures, even the monumental ones, are, as friend and fellow artist David Parker says, “all gentle grace and warmth” … [the sculptor] “engages with the stone as an equal—like wayfarers meeting on a path, Han and a stone spend time together and when they part, both are marked and changed forever.” Yongjin Han's career spanned decades and continents, and included several prestigious large-scale public commissions. In Seoul his work can be found at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the IE Young Museum of Contemporary Art, the Whanki Museum, the Ewha Woman’s University Museum, Posong High School, and the 88 Olympics...

Ligne Light 2 - White Neon, Lime Yellow Glass, by Sabine Marcelis, Table Lamp
By Sabine Marcelis
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
The Ligne sculptures were made during a summer artist residency at Pilchuck school of glass. As with many of Sabine Marcelis's explorations with light, these objects were born from a curiosity to explore how a material volume can interact with a single line of light and in this case also how two very different ways of working with glass can elevate eachother. Together with talented neon benders, Sabine Marcelis hand-bent each of the neon lights to wrap around the various glass volumes, accentuating their mass and in turn, the glass volumes filtering the light. Dutch-Kiwi designer Sabine Marcelis’s work is at the forefront of contemporary material innovation in product and installation design. She works with glass manufacturers and more, forging partnerships across her industry to bring her ambitiously experimental projects to fruition. Marcelis’s focus is on allowing happenstance sensory experiences to emerge by juxtaposing combinations of unlikely materials and colors. She was educated at the Design Academy Eindhoven and since founding her eponymous studio in 2011 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, she has built a remarkable roster of clients in fashion, architecture and art. She has created signature pieces for the likes of Rem Koolhaas’s architecture firm OMA, high-fashion labels Fendi and Isabel Marant and luxury beauty brand Aēsop. She has also exhibited at the Salone del Mobile in Milan and won Wallpaper* magazine’s Designer of the Year award for 2020. Marcelis was invited to create a sculptural intervention for the interiors of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich...
