Francisco Zuniga Original Pastel Nude Painting Catalogued
By Francisco Zúñiga
Located in Dallas, TX
Francisco Zúñiga (Mexican, 1912-1998) Seated nude with extended legs. This woman with eyes heavy in meditation shows a myriad of emotions including humility, vulnerability and fatigue. The figure makes the viewer appreciate those who do all the mundane and heavy lifting service work for us teaching us sympathy and empathy. Another very powerful work by Zuniga worthy of any art space.
Black and sepia Conté Crayons made from a blend of natural pigments, kaolin clay, and graphite on paper.
Signed and dated lower left: Zúñiga / 1975
Ariel Zúñiga personally confirmed the authenticity of this drawing when I acquired it. This painting will be included in his forthcoming Francisco Zúñiga: Catalogue Raisonné, Volume V.
Sheet Size: 19-5/8 x 25-1/2 inches (49.8 x 64.8 cm)
Framed Dimensions 28.5 X 34 Inches
Condition: Excellent original condition. Sheet hinged to mat; pinholes to the corner, inherent to the works creation. Original solid wood frame with wear and touch ups.

José Jesús Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría (December 27, 1912 – August 9, 1998) was a Costa Rican-born Mexican artist, known both for his painting and his sculpture. Journalist Fernando González Gortázar lists Zúñiga as one of the 100 most notable Mexicans of the 20th century, while the Encyclopædia Britannica calls him "perhaps the best sculptor" of the Mexican political modern style.
Zúñiga was born in Guadalupe, Barrio de San José, Costa Rica on December 27, 1912 to Manuel Maria Zúñiga and María Chavarría, both sculptors. His father worked as a sculptor of religious figures, and in stone work. His artistic inclinations began early and by the age of twelve had already read books on the history of art, artistic anatomy and the life of various Renaissance painters. At age fifteen he began working in his father’s shop. This experience sensitized him to shape and spaces. In 1926 he enrolled in the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Mexico, but left the following year to continue on his own. As part of his self-study, he studied German Expressionism and the writings of Alexander Heilmayer, through which he learned of the work of two French sculptors, Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin, coming to appreciate the idea of subordinating technique to expression.
Zúñiga’s painting and sculpting work began receiving recognition in 1929. His first stone sculpture won second prize at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes. In the following two years continued to win top prizes at this event. This work made critics recommend him for study abroad. He won first prize in a 1935 Latin American sculpture...

Part of The Nomadic Series. Artist Kristin Llamas spent 13 months traveling and painting in all fifty states. Each painting was inspired by the artist’s personal experiences in that state.
From K’s journal…
In Cincinnati, Alfonso and I tour the Taft Museum. We like to split up in museums and meet back to talk about our favorite paintings. While walking through the galleries, I realize that we haven’t left each other’s side since the MOCA in Chicago. People always say that the first year with a baby is tough on a marriage, but I wonder what they say about newlyweds living on the road together for a year. I’m convinced that if we can make it through this, we can make it through anything!
For now, we do make it to Columbus. We drive through the Brewery District and German Village. Then, we end up at a tucked away place called The Book Loft. Down an uneven brick walkway, the entrance to the Book Loft leads to a thirty-two-room maze of manuscripts. Without exaggeration, one could easily get lost in this labyrinth of literature…of course I do. To help find the exit, there are little stickers and arrows on the floor leading the way out. While we could spend our entire week exploring this bookstore alone, we follow the arrows out and decide to pay homage to Mr. Dave Thomas. I totaled it up and at this point in our trip we have eaten 114 99¢ Wendy’s side salads. The salad is lunch and the container is a paint palette. It only seems fitting to stop and visit the original Wendy’s before leaving Columbia.
Every step we take, I scribble another page into my sketchbook and little elements of the state sneak into my composition. We explore the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but when we travel to Kent State, time stands still. I run my hand over the bullet hole that has forever scarred a metal sculpture in the lawn. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder were killed here in the shooting on May 4th 1970 when the National Guard opened fire. Nine students were wounded, with one permanently paralyzed, and several seriously maimed. Today, on the hill where students fled, it is a piece of art which stands as a permanent reminder of that tragic day.
The next day is full of lighter journeys as we bounce around to road-side oddities. We walk through a field of cement corn in Dublin, climb a Native American tribute made of stone blocks, and stand in front of an eight story building shaped like a Longaberger basket. As evening closes in, an Amish carriage leads us down the road to Mansfield. We have scheduled to meet with the director of their art center and to our surprise, our arrival feels as if a red carpet has been rolled out for us.
We are so used to a humbly appreciating a quick meeting with gallery owners so when The Executive Director of the Mansfield Art Center takes his afternoon off to show us around, you can imagine our surprise. We head with him to the Walnut Lounge for lunch and dive into some fried pickles. I mention the Amish buggies that we’ve seen around and we learn that Ohio currently has the largest Amish population in all of America. Apparently tax breaks on Ohio land has lead to the recent influx of Amish communities from Pennsylvania.
That same night, we are invited to attend a Saturday night symphony followed by dinner with some of the director’s friends. As Alfonso plays a few songs around their evening fire, we are asked to present an assembly for the Elementary school and give a talk at an Art Center luncheon. We aren’t difficult to convince, however the cherry on top is that I am given a true studio...

The Heart of the Matter – Metal Wall Sculptures
Artist Statement by Tom Hoitsma:
In October 2019 my family learned first-hand a brutal lesson about the climate crisis. Dallas used to see one tornado each year. For the last few years that number had tripled and the intensity of the tornados has increased. On October 20, 2019 one of these super tornados ripped through our Dallas neighborhood. With winds up to 140 miles per hour and three quarters of a mile wide, this tornado literally came right down our street. By some act of God, the tornado jumped over the first 5 houses on the west end of our street (including my house), which I was in at the time with my kids, but destroyed most of the homes just west of us. We have all seen images of this kind of destruction on television but to walk the neighborhood the next morning, and see the destruction with my own eyes was completely surreal and deeply disturbing.
As usual, my eye kept settling on the sculptural beauty in some of the wreckage, especial the twisted metal. I collected some of these broken and bent objects and brought them to my studio to contemplate.
On our walk the morning after the tornado, my 12 year old daughter and I bumped into a couple standing in front of their home. It was destroyed. The roof was gone, a few interior walls were standing but most of the exterior walls were just piles of brick. The couple pointed to an interior white door that was still standing (the exterior walls to that room were gone) and said, “do you see that white door? We were all huddle behind that door when the tornado ripped the roof off the house. The air was thick with debris flying around and we all just clutched each other until it finally passed. In front of that door used to be our bedroom (there were no walls standing). We’re so grateful that the four of us made it out without a scratch.”
And that made me think. People are so resilient. Events in our lives can break our hearts but somehow we cannot be defeated. Like these sculptures, our hearts get tangled, bruised and battered but still remain full of hope and joy. We all emerge, changed from experiences but eventually, hopeful for the future. It became clear that this twisted metal was the perfect metaphor. To take this material which had been so tortured by this tornado and create something vibrant and beautiful. This work, born of the tragedy created by the climate crisis and super storms, is an examination of the impact of the “new normal...

"Rendez-vous Ventetien" by Gerard Valtier is an original oil on canvas that measures 29x36 inches. This impressionistic painting uses warm vivid colors to create a scene of gondola's on a canal in Venice. Many appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors.
Seething with colors, sparkling, blazing, molten gold: the whole mystery of Gerard Valtier’s painting lies in the working of this colorful living chemistry, where the thickening cover of the glaze catches the reflections of the light, which progressively becomes incandescent.
The contrasting blue and yellow, basically naturalistic colors - characteristic of the impressionist palette - create a feeling of bedazzlement which send out their own light, directly imitating the natural effects of light itself. Thus, the property of the color, the interaction of colors as well as their power to create some light, definitely are the basis of Valtier’s work.
The artist can paint everything: barges along the quay, the busy crowds, Venice and its carnival, the bride and her procession - his whole painting is under the sign of the feast. Unlike Renoir or Cezanne, Valtier does not hesitate to use black as a true color, not one designed to soften or drain the pure color, as in the shadows. One will also appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors.
Valtier has had exhibitions throughout the world and has received many awards. He paints from his studio in Arles, France. He is listed in Mayers, Akoun, La Cote des Peinteres, Bordas International, and Financial Art.
