Antique Large Cloisonné Enamel Wall Crucifix with Font
Located in London, GB
Antique large cloisonné enamel wall crucifix with font French, Late 19th Century Height 57cm, width 33cm, depth 7cm This superb decorative cross is designed to hang on a wall, enabled by the small clover-shaped gilt metal handle which surmounts the top. The cross is shaped as a traditional Christian budded crucifix, and features stunning cloisonné enamel decoration that is expertly contrasted by an ebonised wood backing. The cross is centred by a budded panel, that features four blooming flowers wrapped within their vines in a heart-esque pattern. These designs are bordered by a red and gilt geometric surround, which provides an interesting contrast to the more flowing linearity within. Similar flower-and-vine motifs, as well as similar geometric bordering, adorn the rest of the cross’s main body. The colour contrasts within the cloisonné enamel are particularly pleasing, with the pale-yellow ground making the bright hues of the foliate decoration stand out. At the bottom of the cross sits a font, or stoup, originally designed to hold holy water. The font is also decorated with cloisonné enamel, but employs a geometric layered design in differing shades. The reverse of the cross is stamped ‘1138’. Replete with refined decorative elements, this excellent piece of religious décor...

19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860
Located in Central England, GB
This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...

This exceptional antique George VI sterling silver christening set consists of a napkin ring, an egg cup and a spoon. The plain rounded egg cup is ornamented with an elongated indented border to the pedestal and is supported by a stepped octagonal foot, all in the Art Deco style. The napkin ring has a plain quadrilateral shaped form with a convex curved anterior surface, bearing the aforementioned motif. The spoon is embellished with the engraved initials ‘GVI’ amidst collared bands to the stem and features an impressive crown shaped terminal. The reverse surface of the spoon is plain and features a tapering heel to the bowl. The anterior maroon leatherette surface of the box cover is embellished with a central cream panel encompassed with a gold scrolling border and accented with the royal cypher depicting ‘GVIR, 1937’ below the royal coronet. The interior of the cover bears the retailer’s mark ‘By appointment to H.M The King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent Street, London, W.1’. This impressive christening set was crafted by the renowned and highly collectable silversmith Robert Edgar Stone; the posterior surface of the napkin ring bears R. E. Stone’s signature in addition to the full hallmarks. Each component of this set will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the egg cup and napkin ring are struck with the date letter ‘b’ and the spoon bears ‘a’. This set was crafted to commemorate the coronation of George VI (1895-1952), which took place at Westminster Abbey in London on 12th May 1937 Condition This antique christening...
