19th Century Spanish Arab Style Copper Two-Handled Jug with Wrought Iron Stand
Located in Madrid, ES
Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were they durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, symmetrical wing-like handles, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab...

18th Century Italian Baroque Gilded Ewer Repoussé Copper Liturgical Pitcher
Located in Milano, MI
A stunning Italian gilt copper ewer dating back to 18th century with a circular body featuring a quadripartite decoration defined by the repoussé of a double vertical ribbed frame that frames tableaux decorated with floral scrolls; the background of these sections is finely dotted by chisel tool to underline a very pleasant relief to the embossed parts thanks to the burnishing. An excellent and unique hand-made pitcher, selected in a private collection of Northern Italy. This rare golden jug was created to serve wine during the Eucharistic celebration, the Christian liturgical practice. it is an Italian work of art that dates back to 1700, with a wonderful fire gilding, for collectors. In good age related condition regardless of a small dent in the middle part of the body, consistent with the eighteenth-century dating. The cast handle takes up the motif of the volutes present on the body of the ewer. The spout is closed by a hinged lid with a small floral knob, with minimal deformations near the hinge compromising its perfect closure. In the upper part, there are welding signs...

Zoomorphic Partridge Ewer Blue French Glass Late 19th century
By Portieux Vallerysthal
Located in Paris, FR
Original zoomorphic pitcher ewer in the shape of a partridge. Beautiful item made of silver plate for the head of the partridge nicely chiseled showing the lovely texture of feathers and blown blue glass for the body part, with a handle on the back. Yellow-colored glass eyes. The Head of the partridge is mounted on a hinge forming a movable lid for the pitcher-ewer. This kind of pitcher ewer was mainly used to serve delicious alcohol or liquor with flavor and aroma, such as pear, and mirabelle plum, as it was during the "Belle Epoque" a very fashionable and refined custom. This colored blown glass was produced by the Portieux Crystal factory created in 1705, it has a written mark "Deposé" beneath the body of the ewer, french work from the late 19th century, probably from Napoleon III period. The history of this factory known as the "Portieux crystal factory" actually begins in Tonnoy in 1690. In 1698, Duke Leopold I of Lorraine granted letters patent to Sieur de la Pommeraye, owner of the premises, associated with François Magnien, holder of the know-how, the exclusivity of glass manufacturing and trade in his duchy. In 1898, the Grand Duchess of Vladimir, wife of the brother of Tsar Nicolas II, discovered the factory while on a cure in Contrexéville. She will become a frequent customer. in 1960, the company supplies many prestigious customers: Maxim's, Brasserie Lipp, Hôtel de Crillon, Le Bristol...
