Polena Da Nave in Legno Di Castagno Raffigurante Capitan Uncino Italia XIX Sec

Polena in legno di castagno scolpito del XIX secolo, raffigurante Giacomo Uncino meglio conosciuto come Capitan Uncino, famoso pirata e il principale antagonista di Peter Pan.
Uncino è il capitano immaginario di una nave di pirati crudeli.
Viene chimato così perché al posto della mano destra ha un uncino di ferro, la mano gli fu mozzata da Peter Pan durante un combattimento e poi data in pasto ad un coccodrillo, il quale gradì così tanto la mano che spera di mangiarsi anche il pirata al quale continua a dare la caccia.
L’opera, in legno di castagno scolpito è stata realizzata da un bravo scultore ligure, Italia del Nord, alla fine del XIX secolo, di ottima fattura ritrare il mezzo busto di un uomo barbuto, l’occhio destro bendato e l’uncino al posto della mano destra, mentre la mano sinistra impugna una grande spada e una bandana come copriacapo.
Il castagno è un legno pregiato e molto resistente alle intemperie e al vento.
La spada spezzata è stata restaurata in epoca precedente, per il resto lo stato di conservazione è molto buono.
Una polena è una decorazione lignea, che si trovava sulla prua delle navi dal XVI al XIX secolo.
La pratica fu introdotta inizialmente nei galeoni, ma anche navi più antiche avevano spesso alcune decorazioni nella prua.

Nautical compass mounted by a brass gimbal into a copper brass bound case with sloping glazed aperture with heavily bevelled glass. Flat brass bezel with five holding screws signed ‘E.S.Ritchie’ and numbered 5779. Side opening compartment for a lighted wick with drawer beneath.
The compass is mounted in a heavy painted brass bowl with very fine copper pivot supporting the floating direction card. A diaphragm is located in the base of the bowl for temperature compensation.
E.S.Ritchie founded the business in 1850 to manufacture mechanical, electrical and scientific instruments. In 1857 he turned his attention to navigational instruments and begun making marine bearing compasses for the U.S.Navy before the American civil war. At the time the British admiralty dry mounted nautical compasses were considered by all navies and commercial shipping companies as the highest technological standard of the day, however, in 1860 Ritchie had received a US patent for the first successful and practical liquid-filled marine compass...

A rare 19th century folk art diorama of two sailing vessels racing at sea.
Located in Central England, GB
This most attractive mid 19th century folk art cased diorama shows a view at sea with a large three mast English ship being chased in a racing situation by a smaller and faster single mast yacht. Both are passing by a lighthouse which is in the foreground.
This diorama has been beautifully handmade. The vessel, sails and lighthouse are all hand carved in wood and very nicely painted in bright colours as is the setting of the choppy sea which has most likely been formed in papier mâché.
The most appealing element of this piece is its small compact size which easily lends itself for display on a shelf, table or perhaps wall mounted.
The case is made from nailed pine boards which have been papered and painted black and finished with a glazed front set into putty.
The glass is original and period with lovely handmade imperfections.
This decorative diorama is in excellent original condition.
