The MoMA Library
By Xiaoze Xie
Located in Surfside, FL
This piece is part of an ongoing project entitled "Fragmentary Views" (2001 - Present) by Xiaoze Xie, which is a series of paint-compositions based upon photographs of found newspaper piles. For Xie, stacks of printed pages represent not only cultural memory and the passage of time, but the ways in which history is interpreted and recorded according to various belief systems and political agendas. This is a lithograph, signed, dated 2006, and numbered 28/30 The artist continues his ongoing series of works, Fragmentary Views (2001 to present), which explores the vulnerability and fragmentary nature of historical memory, and the general and superficial perception of world events in the age of ready global media. The paintings depict stacked newspapers where only bits of information are visible-a greater understanding is implicit, but just out of view. "What interests me most is the temporary nature of this mundane object loaded with all-encompassing information of changing daily life: from the front-page news to stock market columns to birth announcements and obituaries. Newspapers are recycled. Life goes on." - Xiaoze Xie In the compressed stacks of newspapers, viewers will notice partial images of fragile life in Baghdad, distraught looks of disbelief of suicide attack victims, the building site of the World Trade Center, campaigns against Fa Lung Gong, and, more recent events that are closer to home. The gravity of these events is muffled as it is embedded in the mundane scroll of daily life. Xiaoze Xie immigrated from the People's Republic of China in 1992, where he was born and studied art and architecture. He has MFA degrees from Beijing and North Texas University, and taught at Bucknell University before assuming his post as Professor of Art at Stanford. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and distinguished private collections. Miss Prather's Class
By Winfred Rembert
Located in New York, NY
Color Reduction woodcut from 4 blocks with 4 silk screen colors and embossing on white Rives BFK paper Edition 28/30, Unframed MassArt welcomed artist Winfred Rembert for the 2014 Master Print Series, an artist in residency project during which, an established artist transforms an idea into physical artwork, and invites students to collaborate in the art-making process. A self-taught artist, Winfred Rembert records a painful chapter of American history in autobiographical paintings, created on hand-tooled and dyed leather, which explore the lives of African Americans in Jim Crow-era Georgia. After taking part in civil rights demonstrations, he survived a lynching only to be sent to prison to do hard labor on a chain gang. Another inmate taught him leatherworking and Rembert began depicting his past in engaging compositions and vibrant color. In many scenes, Rembert offers a raw view of racism, inequality, and violence while celebrating his community’s resilience in the face of such overwhelming injustice. Winfred Rembert also participated in the Adderley Lecture series, which features distinguished artists, historians, and writers and was established in 1995 in memory of Tyrone Maurice Adderley. Past Adderley lecturers have included Chakaia Booker, Melvin Edwards...

Vibrant lithograph by Israeli master JOSSI STERN. on paper mounted to board. Sefardic Rabbi studying with son Torah. 23 x 21 framed 13.5 x 19.5 Hungary, b. 1923, d. 1992 Jossi (Yossi) Stern, son of David and Katerina, was born in the Bakon Hills of Hungary, in 1923. He was already drawing when at the age of ten he moved with his family from the Bakon Hill region to the considerably more cosmopolitan Budapest. Recognizing the looming threat of Hitler and the pending Nazi invasion of Hungary, in 1940, at the age of seventeen, the young artist made his way to Palestine aboard the Sakaria, an old ship heavily crowded with 2,300 other refugees. Before reaching the shores of Palestine, then under the British Mandate, the British Navy intercepted the ship and declared Stern and all those aboard illegal immigrants. Stern was sent to a prison camp where he remained incarcerated by the British for six months. In 1943, having spent a few years doing agricultural work, Stern was encouraged by close friends who recognized his artistic talent to enroll in the prestigious Bezalel School of the Arts in Jerusalem. An outstanding student, he eventually became a highly respected teacher of Graphic Arts at Bezalel. Stern is recognized in Israel as having been one of the country's premier artists. His drawings are exhibited and appear in many publications and museums worldwide. Stern was the recipient of numerous awards including the Jerusalem Medal as well as both the UNESCO and Herzl Prize. He was included in the exhibition New Bezalel Artists' House, Jerusalem Tel Aviv Museum, along with Artists: Ludwig Wolpert, Joseph Budko, Gershon Knispel, Gershon Avigdor Arikha, Maryan, Jacob Steinhardt, Ruth Schloss...

Judaica interior scene etching with hand coloring
By Ira Moskowitz
Located in Surfside, FL
I believe the scene is of a wedding engagement. etching with extensive hand coloring (making it a unique original work of art) Ira Moskowitz (1912-2001), descendant of a long rabbinical line, was born in Galicia Poland and went with his family to Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1914. The family remained there until 1927, and young Moskowitz received his first education in Prague's schools. Soon after, his family moved to New York City, and in 1927 Moskowitz became the pupil of Henry Wickey at the Art Students League, having finally resolved his conflict between a passion for drawing and a desire to follow the rabbinical profession of his forefathers. Between 1935 and 1938, he traveled to Israel and to Europe, Paris, France where he studied the works of the old masters, an interest derived from his first teacher and one that eventually led to his active collaboration in 1954 on the four-volume series, "Great Drawings of All Time." In 1939, Moskowitz made his first trip to Mexico, and stayed for six months. In 1943 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and moved to New Mexico, where he remained for seven years drawing the Indians and becoming an active member of the Taos-Sante Fe artists group. It was in New York, as a student of Harry Wickey and Jerome Meyers at the Art Students League ( 1928 -32), that Moskowitz honed his talents as an artist. In the mid-to-late 1930s in Mexico, Ira was drawn to the traditions of the native peoples; in Israel, what was then British MandatePalestine he was absorbed with the religious ceremonies of the Hasidic Jews. The prints and drawings Moskowitz created in Mexico in 1941 earned him a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1943. In 1944, Ira and his wife, the artist Anna Barry moved to Taos, New Mexico. Moskowitz was entranced by New Mexico's light, landscapes, and cultures. By the time Ira arrived there, the region had already attracted Georgia O'Keeffe, Robert Henri, and Leon Gaspard...

Jane Goldman Contemporary Floral Luminous Color Etching Flowers Chinese Geishas
Located in Surfside, FL
Hand signed and dated intaglio etching in color. 1982 Corner Reflections #2 Jane E. Goldman was born in Dallas, Texas in 1951 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Smith College and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin. She is known for her high color floral and nature design painting, printmaking and teaching. Goldman's media include watercolor, oil painting, silkscreen, intaglio print, lithograph, relief, screenprint,. aquatint etching and terrazzo. "Lyrical realism," based on a combination of free association and direct observation, best describes her style. Goldman’s luminous prints reveals the artist’s muse in a graphically novel way. Her work pays homage to 19th-century naturalist and artist John James Audubon. Goldman’s sun-dappled still life compositions, sprays of cut flowers in glass vases and lush flora growing in natural environments frame each setting and cast shadows across opened books that display images from Audubon’s Birds of America. Jane Goldman dance of light and dark patterns over table cloths, floor tiles and interior views dazzle with their use of color and composition. Goldman is the co-owner/director of Mixit Print Studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. A nationally recognized painter and printmaker, she has taught at Massachusetts College of Art, the University of California at Los Angeles, Rice University in Houston, and the University of Hartford. She has been a visiting artist at many institutions, including Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin, Smith College, Wellesley College, and the University of Dallas. Since 1975, Goldman’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. She has received grants from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has also received residency fellowships from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland, the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Germany, and the Cite des Arts in Paris. Along with Janet Fish, Richard Bosman, Gladys Nilsson, Mary Lee Bendolph, Marylyn Dintenfass, Sidney Hurwitz, Hunt Slonem, April Gornik, Karsten Creightney, Stanley Casselman...

Naive Lithograph Paris Train Station Wedding Party, Honeymoon Scene Folk Art
Located in Surfside, FL
Hand signed, limited edition on BFK Rives French art paper. I believe the title is Honeymoon. Jan Balet (20 July 1913 in Bremen – 31 January 2009 in Estavayer le Lac, Switzerland), was a German/US-American painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Affected by the folk art style of naive art he worked particularly as a graphic artist and as an Illustrator of children's books. His works exhibit a dry wit and refreshingly candid, whimsical, satirical view of life. His uncle was the famous painter and illustrator Benno Eggert. Many well-known personalities of the time were friends of his grandfather, i.e. the painters Hans Purrmann, Karl Caspar, Maria Caspar-Filser (cousin of his mother), the writer Martin Andersen Nexo, the Swabian poet Wilhelm Schussen as well as the poet and writer Oskar Wöhrle. In 1929, at the age of 17, he moved to Berlin at the invitation of his father and studied Drawing at the college of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule Ost am Schlesischen Bahnhof). A year later, he went to live with his mother and his grandmother, in Munich. Balet transferred his studies to the Munich College of Arts but was dismissed in 1932. He went on to study with Professor Ege, at a private school for commercial art. During this time he also worked at an institute for lithography and for the art gallery Wallach. Balet rented his first small studio at the age of nineteen, where he manufactured and sold hand colored Bavarian woodcuts. 1934 he passed the entrance examination to the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München and undertook further studies with Olaf Gulbransson. His work is of a popular style similar to Michel Delacroix, Charles Fazzino and James Rizzi. In early 1938 Balet was recruited by the German military and because his ancestor's passport was not complete, he was forbidden to associate further with the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. Later that year Balet emigrated to the USA, settled in New York and painted rustic furniture for a living. One winter he jobbed as a skiing teacher in Vermont and occasionally jobbed as an advertising commercial artist. Among other projects, he painted the cafeteria of the largest of New York's department stores R.H. Macy. From time to time Balet's designs appeared in the fashion magazine Mademoiselle and in 1943 he became Art Director at the magazine. Balet became so successful as a commercial artist that he was able to give up paid employment and start his own business. He worked for the radio station CBS, magazines such as Vogue, House and Garden, House Beautiful, The Saturday Evening Post, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, This week. After the war ended in 1945 he acquired U.S. citizenship. Balet commuted between his studio in New York and an old, boat house in the dunes of Montauk, Long Island, which he had converted to a studio where he painted and drew. His first children's book Amos and the Moon was published in 1948. Judaica interior scene etching with hand coloring
By Ira Moskowitz
Located in Surfside, FL

Judaica Jewish Shtetl Etching Yeshiva Talmudic Study Vintage Chassidic Art Print
By Paul Jeffay
Located in Surfside, FL
"Qui a raison?" Chassidic boy, Yeshiva student with open book. Judaica, Jewish scenes from a ghetto. Saul Yaffie, a.k.a. Paul Jeffay, (1898–1957) was a Scottish Jewish artist. Known for his charming French street scenes as well as his judaica work. This is signed in the plate and dated 1931 in the print. This is done in a style similar to the works of the early Bezalel School artists Hermann Struck and Jakob Steinhardt. This lithograph, by artist Paul Jeffay depicts a Judaic Shtetl interior scene with great charm and sensitivity. Saul Yaffie was born in Blythswood, Glasgow on 29 April 1898. His mother was Kate Yaffie (née Karkonoski), and his father, Bernard Yaffie, was a master tailor. Like many Russian Jews, Kate and Bernard Yaffie fled persecution in Russia during a wave of anti-Jewish pogroms triggered by the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. Saul's father was naturalised as a British citizen by the time that Saul himself was three; a Bernard Yaffie is recorded as living at Abbotsford Place in the old Gorbals, where the young Saul spent the early years of his childhood. The Yaffies were not unique in their situation: the Gorbals was the centre of Scotland's Jewish community and home to a large proportion of Glasgow's immigrants throughout the early 20th century. Over time, there was a movement to some of the more affluent communities in Glasgow, such as Pollokshields and Garnethill, as many Jewish families gradually improved their social and economic situation. Like these, the Yaffies also experienced a time of good fortune, moving to a more agreeable address on Sinclair Drive, Cathcart as Bernard's tailoring business prospered. Saul attended day classes in drawing and painting, modelling, and life drawing at The Glasgow School of Art from 1912 to 1919. During the First World War, he was required to interrupt his studies to serve in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1916/17. Although subject to military conscription, Yaffie reached the rank of corporal during his service. Prior to his conscription Yaffie engaged in munitions work, something that was recorded in the GSA's student registers. The post-war economic depression that affected the country during the 1920s, also affected the Yaffie family directly: Bernard Yaffie's business suffered greatly, and the family eventually emigrated to Canada. Saul did not emigrate with his family, choosing instead to stay in Europe, and relocate to jazz age Paris where he continued his artistic practice. Now married, Saul sought to escape persecution in Europe by returning to the UK before the Second World War with his wife, Estusia. The two settled in Manchester, but returned to France after the war. In his memoires ‘Bronze in My Blood’, German-born sculptor Benno Schotz describes a Saul ‘Yaffe’, one of only three other Jewish students who attended The Glasgow School of Art at the time. (Schotz himself was exempt from joining the forces because he was ‘not yet a British subject’, and was engaged in war work in the drawing office of John Brown’s shipyards). On the outbreak of the war, Schotz writes, Yaffie won a poster competition to be displayed in Glasgow tramcars at the beginning of the 1914-18 war – his winning design depicted a woman with a child in her arms, fleeing from a fire behind her. While on leave from service, the young Saul told Schotz he had briefly been stationed in the same unit as Jewish American sculptor Jacob Epstein. This was most likely the 38th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, also known as ‘the Jewish Legion’, one of five Jewish battalions raised during WW1. ‘He told me how incongruous it was’, remembers Schotz, ‘to See Epstein scrubbing the floor of their hut, with a large diamond ring on his finger’. His work is included in the collection of the Ben Uri Museum in London along with Lucian Freud, David Bomberg, Mark Gertler, Josef Herman, Jankel Adler, Feliks Topolski...

Israeli Expressionist Yosl Bergner Modernist Lithograph Kibbutz Coffee Grinder
By Yosl Bergner
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract Composition, Coffee Grinder Hand signed in Hebrew Lower right. limited edition. Dimensions: H 18.5" x 24.9" Bergner, Yosl (Vladimir Jossif) (b Vienna, 13 Oct 1920). surrealist, surrealism. belongs to the generation of people uprooted from childhood landscapes and forced by circumstance to build a life elsewhere. Uniquely, he became an Israeli without shedding his Jewish cosmopolitan-refugee identity, an identity he zealously guarded in the melting pot of Israel of the "fifties" and "sixties". In the years that have passed since he acquired his art education at the Melbourne National Gallery Art School in Australia, concepts in the art world have changed many times over. from the Jewish paintings and the depictions of Australian Aborigines through the children of safed, the wall paintings, the masks, the angels and kings, the still lifes, the "Surrealistic" paintings, the toys and flowers, the paintings inspired by the Bird-head Haggadah, the Kafka paintings, the Pioneers, the Kimberley fantasy (about his father's excursion in 1933 to northern Australia, in search of a "territory for the Jews"), Brighton Beach and the seascapes inspired by Eugene Boudin, through the chairs in the "Kings of Nissim Aloni" episode to the "Zionists" and the recent "Tahies". "During the six years that Bergner has lived in Israel," wrote Eugene KoIb, Direct. or of the Tel Aviv Museum, in the catalog of the Bergner exhibit in 1957, "he has established himself among Israeli artists." Bergner was indeed one of the artists who represented Israel in the Venice Biennial (1956; 1958) and in the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1957; this, in spite of the fact that Yosl Bergner did not harness his art to serve the Zionist ethos, that being, at the time, the order of the day (his paintings were in fact rejected at first as being those of a "Diaspora Jew"); he didn't "naturalize" himself by alliance to the country's landscape or its special light, nor did he turn to abstract painting. Painter of "the Jewish condition". the painter involved in Nissim Aloni's theater and the popular illustrator of poetry books and literary texts, he stuck to the narrative which drew its images from his childhood world, from Yiddish and from the Jewish culture of Poland in whose bosom he grew, with its literature, theater and fantasy. From this point of view his position as an "outsider", first in Australia and later in Israel, like that of the European Jew on the periphery of the dominant culture, afforded him a special dialectic vantage point from which to view his human and cultural surroundings. He was and remains a figurative painter even when he verges on the abstract. Israeli painter of Austrian birth, active in Australia. He grew up in Warsaw. His father, the pseudonymous Jewish writer Melech Ravitch, owned books on German Expressionism, which were an early influence. Conscious of rising anti-Semitism in Poland, Ravitch visited Australia in 1934 and later arranged for his family to settle there. Bergner arrived in Melbourne in 1937. Poor, and with little English, his struggle to paint went hand-in-hand with a struggle to survive. In 1939 he attended the National Gallery of Victoria’s art school and came into contact with a group of young artists including Victor O’Connor (b 1918) and Noel Counihan...
