This bird cage shaped hanging fixture was originally designed by Frederic Weinberg as a planter. A slight variation of this design was also available as an actual bird cage, but I can find no reference to it having been offered by Frederic Weinberg as a ceiling fixture. So I assume it was converted to a hanging fixture for its original owner, where it hung in the center of a circular staircase.
