- Wrought Iron Architectural Four-Panel ScreenLocated in Hanover, MASATURDAY SALE These early 20th century wrought iron hinged panels or grilles came from the 775 Grove St, Glencoe, IL home of encyclopedia publisher Frank E. Compton. Each panel weights ~100 pounds, is 74 inches high (84 inches to top of gothic finial ornaments) and 20 inches wide. As shown the total width is ~70 inches but it can be expanded or contracted as desired. The house is said to have been built circa 1910 in the Mediterranean style. Frank E. Compton lived at 775 Grove Street Glencoe, IL until 1938 with his second wife Annie Wilson Howe, niece of US President Woodrow Wilson. Additions by Armstrong, Furst & Tilton, 1928. House featured in House & Garden, 1930. These heavy iron screens were used inside to conceal a door, behind which was a spiral staircase down to a secret bar...Category

So I assume it was converted to a hanging fixture for its original owner, where it hung in the center of a circular staircase. The form is of a stylized tower with an onion dome...Category
