Constructed in a well-figured Honduras mahogany, with carved highlights; rising from cabriole leg 'ball and claw' feet, with acanthus carving at the knees, with swept and carved corner blocks; over, a running 'egg-and-dart moulding with a central leaf carved cartouche centred about a scallop shell, are two lockable glazed doors, with astragals delineating fifteen panes enclosing a shelved interior; surmounted by a pierced swan neck pediment with paterae teminals set about a turned finial, circa 1910. A scarce antique early American country single drawer lift-top faux grain painted blanket chest - mule chest with beautifully aged warm rich patina, circa 1780 Hand-crafted in the New England region of the Northeastern United States in the second half of the 18th century, comprised of solid wood, most likely pine or poplar, since expensive woods were hard to find throughout the Colonies, especially the rural areas, it features the original rich warm Colonial hand painted faux cherry graining finish and beautifully aged reddish brown patina. Crafted in period English Chippendale taste, having a hinged lid door at the top that flips open to reveal the large sized storage trunk, fitted with a small compartment for storing smaller items.
