18th Century New England Country American Single Drawer Blanket Mule Chest

About the Item

A scarce antique early American country single drawer lift-top faux grain painted blanket chest - mule chest with beautifully aged warm rich patina, circa 1780 Hand-crafted in the New England region of the Northeastern United States in the second half of the 18th century, comprised of solid wood, most likely pine or poplar, since expensive woods were hard to find throughout the Colonies, especially the rural areas, it features the original rich warm Colonial hand painted faux cherry graining finish and beautifully aged reddish brown patina. Crafted in period English Chippendale taste, having a hinged lid door at the top that flips open to reveal the large sized storage trunk, fitted with a small compartment for storing smaller items. Over a single full-length drawer with quality hand-cut dovetail joinery and affixed with an unusual trio of brass batwing pulls. Raised on ogee bracket feet with carved and molded edge trim. Provenance: A wonderfully curated Clarance, Upstate New York private estate Dimensions: (approx) 32.5" High, 48.5" Wide, 19" Deep Versatile: Ideal large size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a bedroom commode dresser, farmhouse dining sideboard server - buffet table, credenza, oversized console table, tv media stand, and as a blanket trunk casket / cassone, to name just a few. Great shape overall, especially considering its age. Presents well, enhanced by nicely worn, naturally distressed patina with luminous mahogany coloring, elegant warmth, and rustic charm. Strong, sturdy, stable and structurally sound. Delivered ready for many more centuries of use.
