Antique Georgian Period Dovetailed Oak Mule Chest

About the Item

A Georgian era (1714-1837) English oak mule chest. Born in the late 18th / early 19th century, during the reign of King George III (1760-1820), fine quality craftsmanship and construction, hand-crafted of warm rich solid oak, used to store clothing and personal items because closets were nonexistent in Colonial homes, having a rectangular case with high-quality dovetail joinery, hinged lift-top on forged iron strap hinges, over two lower exterior drawers that were placed there due to the impracticality and difficulty of reaching items stored at the bottom of the coffer. The drawers in a mule chest were often used to store slippers called “mules” by the colonists, thus the name mule chest. Ready for travel, it was mounted with carrying handles at the sides, rising on front ball feet. circa 1790 Dimensions: (approx) 23" High, 36.5" Wide, 20.25" Deep Versatile: As warm and attractive as it is useful, having the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses in today's contemporary interiors, including as an end of bed blanket chest, coffee table, clothing storage trunk, end table, and more.
