18th Century Dutch Baroque Period Carved Dowry Chest

About the Item

An elaborately carved Baroque period Dutch dowry chest with beautifully aged warm rustic heavily distressed patina! Netherlands, 18th Century, with later elements, Renaissance taste, finely, hand-crafted, having a rectangular solid wood dovetailed case with hinged lid, featuring an exquisitely decorated facade panel with intricate flower carvings, chip carved running ornamentation and visible hand-cut dovetail joinery, flanked by forged iron carry handles, rising on paw feet with substantial losses. circa 1750 Provenance / Acquisition: Purported to be property from the Estate of Mary Kay Ash (1918-2001) Preston Hollow, Dallas, Texas. An American businesswoman and founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics. Acquired from the highly reputable auction house J. Garrett Auctioneers, Dallas, Texas. Dimensions: (approx) 24" High, 65" Wide, 24" Deep Ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a blanket chest or storage trunk, end of bed bench, occasional table, or decorative wabi-sabi piece! Condition: Great unrestored antique condition, especially considering its nearly 300 years old. Nicely aged patina over the whole. Wear consistent with age and indicative of use. Retaining original antique character marks and rustic charm throughout, including substantial losses to the feet and scattered losses overall. Structurally sound. Presents very well, with interesting historical character and a dark rich warmth that can only be acquired over long periods of time!     A scarce antique early American country single drawer lift-top faux grain painted blanket chest - mule chest with beautifully aged warm rich patina, circa 1780 Hand-crafted in the New England region of the Northeastern United States in the second half of the 18th century, comprised of solid wood, most likely pine or poplar, since expensive woods were hard to find throughout the Colonies, especially the rural areas, it features the original rich warm Colonial hand painted faux cherry graining finish and beautifully aged reddish brown patina. Crafted in period English Chippendale taste, having a hinged lid door at the top that flips open to reveal the large sized storage trunk, fitted with a small compartment for storing smaller items. Over a single full-length drawer with quality hand-cut dovetail joinery and affixed with an unusual trio of brass batwing pulls. Raised on ogee bracket feet with carved and molded edge trim.
