18th Century, Italian Bronze Sculpture with Venus Removing Her Sandal
Located in IT
18th Century, Italian Bronze Sculpture with Venus Removing Her Sandal
This bronze sculpture represents Venus as she takes off her sandal. Made in the neoclassical era in Italy, it consists of the bronze sculpture of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, Venus for the Romans. The naked goddess, getting ready for the bath, makes the very human gesture of loosing a sandal.
The left arm is raised, as if to compensate the position while maintaining the balance. Next to her, wrapped around a rocky spur, is a dolphin, an animal iconographically linked to the goddess because of his birth from the foam of the sea. The figure rests on a cylindrical and concave bronze base, with finely chiselled reserves. The bronze element is in turn resting on a africano marble cylinder with black of Belgium marble base.
Venus is one of the major Roman goddesses primarily associated with eros and beauty. It is traditionally understood as the equivalent of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, physical and passionate love, among the major deities of Olympus. His birth is due to a dramatic event: Uranus, Heaven, is mutilated by his son Cronus, who punishes him for the wrongs inflicted on his mother. The torn limbs of Uranus fall into the sea and fertilize the foam of the waves of the island of Cyprus. From the waves emerges in all its splendor Aphrodite. Since the 4th century, Aphrodite begins to be represented with characters more human and less heroic. Praxiteles with the 'Aphrodite Cnidia,' for the first time in the history of sculpture, depicts her naked, as she prepares to take a ritual bath.
From the Pressitele’s model descend the Capitoline Venus (Capitoline Museums of Rome) and the Venus de’ Medici (Uffizi Museum of Florence) accompanied by Eros on the back of a dolphin.
This vein also includes a subject frequently attested in the Hellenistic and then Roman Ages, with examples in bronze, marble and terracotta: the Aphrodite who fastens the sandal.
The luck that this type of representation had in the following centuries is demonstrated by the vast number of sculptures that represent it. In this bronze work the goddess resumes the position of Oplontis’s Naked Venus: here Venus holds an apple in her left hand, a reminder of her victory in the beauty contest in which she prevailed over Minerva and Juno by judgment of Paris. In our bronze instead, the hand seems to want to shake the apple, which however has not been molded. Perhaps the bronze is inspired by another work, such as the bronzes kept in the archaeological museum of Padua. Another example is the famous 'Venus in bikini" found in Pompeii, so-called because it depicts the goddess in the same pose, but with the breasts and hips covered by bands painted in gold.
The dolphin depicted next to it could be inspired instead to the Medici Venus...

Bronze Casting from the 1930s Giovanni De Martino
By Giovanni De Martino
Located in bari, IT
De Martino is a classical artist, known for the production of sculptures of small bronze busts, in particular (“scugnizzi”, fishermen, commoners) with realistic features.
He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples under the guidance of Stanislao Nome, Gioacchino Toma, and Achille D ’Orsi, from whom he learned the ability to portray the most realistic details using them on very young subjects. Very young he moved to Paris where he performed small sculptural groups, exhibiting frequently at the "Paris Salon" where he won the prize of the Louvre Museum for the bronze work Le Pêcheur de criquets (The Fisher of locusts, Naples, private collection).
Returning to Naples, he returned to a socialist realism and produced sculptures depicting characteristic Neapolitan types, especially urchins, “street urchins”, little boys and young fishermen. From 1916-1931 he was master of the sculptor Angelo Frattini.
Later the dominant theme of his production was childhood, in particular thoughtful, sad, gaunt children were represented in his works, on whose faces the signs of abandonment and suffering emerged. De Martino became known with the nickname of “The sculptor of children”.

About Maiolica Cacciapuoti
(Artistic Majolica Fratelli Cacciapuoti of Giuseppe, Ettore & Guglielmo Cacciapuoti - Schioppa & Cacciapuoti - Neapolitan Artistic Ceramic Factory of Mario Cacciapuoti & C. - Gres d'Arte Cacciapuoti & Bignami & C. - Gres d'Arte Cacciapuoti - Cesare Cacciapuoti.)
The manufacturing of artistic ceramics "Cacciapuoti" was founded in Naples by Cesare Cacciapuoti, belonging to a family of maiolicaari from Campania.
His son Giuseppe (1828-1896) inherited the company circa 1880, when some of his works were exhibited, first in Turin and then in Milan.
In the factory also works his brother Ettore who presents some of his ceramics at the Paris Exhibition of 1889.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the manufacture, specialized in terracotta imitating bronze and copper, is managed by the sons of Giuseppe, Cesare (who opened in 1883 a factory in its own association with the manufacturer of crockery Schioppa), Ettore and Guglielmo.
Among the collaborators of this early period we remember the painter Giovan Battista Foschi.
Between the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, painters and modellers of the highest level collaborated with the firm, including Attilio Pratella and Filippo Cifariello.
In the early twentieth century the manufacture passes into the hands of Ettore and Guglielmo who work to make the production more modern and competitive starting to produce earthenware works made by casting.
In 1906 Ettore left the factory and moved to Paris where he began his career as a painter and Guglielmo took over all the shares in the factory and continued production under the name of "Stabilimento Ceramico Artistico Partenopeo".
In 1907 the sons of Guglielmo, Mario and Guido moved to Treviso where they collaborated with the "Gregory" ceramic factory and where they met Arturo Martini
In 1927 Mario and Guido, in partnership with Angelo Bignami, who deals with the commercial and administrative sectors, left Treviso and founded the "Mario Cacciapuoti & C." ceramics factory in viale Premuda 34 in Milan. Which remains active until 1930.
In 1930 Mario died prematurely and the management of the company remained in the hands of Guido, who started manufacturing on the road to success, producing a production of high quality and quantity, both models and pieces.
Among the ceramists working for the manufacture we remember: Francesco De Matteis, Giuseppe Granello, Ruffo Giuntini, Silvio Righetto, Giuseppe Renda, Achille D'Orsi and De Martino.
In these years some animalist models are supplied to the manufactory by the sculptor and ceramist Sirio Tofanari...
