Massachusetts - Landscape Paintings

Since summer 2004, I have lived in southern Italy, in the region of Puglia, the province of Bari, in a town called Altamura. A two-week restoration project of the Jesce Masseria brought me here. My plan after that was to set up an atelier in Paris and spend my days painting the pretty and elongated noses of the Parisians. Two weeks was all I planned to be in Altamura. I am drawn like love to this countryside where I live now. Olive trees are woven in the ochre-colored hills that extend from Altamura. The vista is a tapestry of silver and saffron threads, a palette of the subtle hues of a faded fresco. The air is perfumed by tomatoes drying in the sun and the fermenting juices pressed from the fleshy grapes. Underneath a lapis blue sky, the prehistoric looking "ferula" plant unfolds on the plains like a congregation of nomads crossing a desert. I sense this countryside has fought to survive. The land is raw, brutally honest, and as passionate as the works of Van Gogh. The people of Altamura are tireless workers and the gatekeepers of traditions. I am drawn to their vitality and passionate spirit. I am intrigued by their dark ebony eyes, antique profiles, beautifully weathered skin and stone chiseled hands. A subtle, caramel color saturates my canvases as I paint the very old and the very young - Il Viaggio dela Vita! My mother's family emigrated from northern Italy in the early nineteen hundreds. When they arrived in Canada, it took only three generations for my family's stories to fade and language to be lost. Here, I am discovering the soil that seeded my family. Artist Commentary: I started a series of paintings of places in the town I live in: Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. In many New England small towns, the most important buildings are the white protestant churches in the commons. In Shrewsbury, this church is called “the First Congregational Church”. So it made sense to start my painting collection with this church. My fellow painters told me that New England churches have been painted millions of times, and that it could be a boring subject. However, I was struck by the beauty in these churches. Coming from the French Loire Valley where winters are grey and rainy, I loved the crisp, blue sky of New England in winter and the way the church and the snow shared the same pearly white color. Compared to where I come from, churches are instead made of yellow ochre stone and snow is very rare. Overall, I just started to paint what was different for me. A wonderfully colorful early piece by William Lester Stevens. Housed in a beautiful period Newcomb-Macklin frame. Great package! William Lester Stevens was born in Rockport, Massachusetts in 1888. He first studied art under Parker Perkins and, by the age of eighteen, had his paintings accepted by the National Academy of Design and won a scholarship to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, training under Edmund Tarbell. After studying in Europe he retuned home and helped establish the Rockport Art Association with Aldro Hibbard and Harry Vincent. Until the 1940’s, Stevens remained in Rockport and the Cape Ann area, painting, teaching and continuously showing paintings. Later, Stevens moved to Conway, Massachusetts where he made a studio and continued to paint. He taught classes at both Princeton and Boston University. He won more awards and prizes for his work than any other living American artist in New England. The awards he garnered were impressive, over one hundred national awards and prizes. Among his most outstanding are the 4th William A. Clark Prize from the Corcoran Art Gallery, Washington, DC; the Gedney Bunce Award from the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Hartford, Connecticut; Second Atman Prize at the National Academy of Design, New York City; First Prize in the Springfield Art League, Best Work of Art in Oil Painting in Rockport Art Association shows; and the William Delano Purchase Prize from the American Watercolor Society. Whitney was born in Connecticut in 1981, lived in Surrey, England for nearly a decade, and currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Denison University, and her Post Baccalaureate Certificate and her Master of Fine Arts Degree from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
