The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters and carvers mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle (much like in this antique church relic), and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this stunning hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican.

Thanks to its extra large size and great condition this alabaster chandelier is one of the best alabaster chandeliers that we have ever seen or sold. This antique and entirely hand-carved alabaster chandelier will light up your days and evenings in a way that no modern fixture ever could. Anyone who has ever seen one in real life knows exactly what we are talking about. For this stunning, four light specimen they clearly used the perfect alabaster rock, because this unique shade comes with numerous and evenly divided black veins. That combined with the whiter veins and patches that have formed in this mineral stone over a period of thousands of years makes it truly special.
We have several interior designer clients who are looking for these largest of alabaster chandeliers and they know that finding one over 25 inches in diameter is like the proverbial needle in the haystack. This not only is one of the largest (in diameter) antique alabaster pendants that we have ever had the pleasure of offering, it also is one of the deepest/highest. However, what takes this rare size chandelier to a level of its own are the scrolling leaf and flower patterns that are deeply and sharply hand carved all around the body. This level of workmanship was rare, even in the early 1900s and since this light would have cost a small fortune in those days, you can rest assure that only the best artisan would have been allowed to do these (exceptional) carvings.
The original rope hanging to this monumental chandelier was 'shot' and we replaced it with bronzed chain that perfectly complements the entire look and feel of this majestic pendant. Combined with the large, original and height adjustable alabaster canopy this rare light can be used and enjoyed in all kinds of interiors and in all kinds of living spaces. For it to still be in this very good condition after more than 100 years is like an ode to the craftsmanship of early 1900 artisans in Europe. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this chandelier in general and the one of a kind, supersize shade in particular. In real life (or in person) our antiques always have that little bit extra and this unique and truly large alabaster chandelier...

If you are appreciative of rare and sculptural antiques then this large mirror / side table could be exactly what you are looking for. The quality and the patina of the large, fighting phoenix bird and dragon frame is second to none and for it to be in such good condition is truly amazing. It takes a special craftsman and artist to create such a piece, the type that you simply don't find anymore in this day and age. Because of the subject matter and the great quality, the first name that comes to mind would be that of master sculptor Gabriel Viardot. However, Viardot virtually made all of his dragon sculptures in the Chinoiserie style and this piece is clearly more European. In terms of the quality of the carvings, whomever created this unique piece of furniture certainly was no less artistic or skilled as Viardot, because this piece really is among the best you will ever see. The way in which this hand carved wooden phoenix is holding the shield-like beveled mirror in its claws and the way the dragon seems to try to fend off the enormous and fierce phoenix is both dramatic and impressive at the same time and it will never seize to amaze you or anyone visiting. Especially when you see the detailed carvings and the true size of this work of beauty in real life, you will be stunned. This antique oak cabinet was crafted in the early 20th century in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia around 1720. The cabinet was entirely built from the finest quality European summer oak. It features two doors and is richly adorned with molding in geometric patterns. The wooden molding was attached to the oanels by the use of pegs. The doors showcase a floral maple inlay. They retain their original hinges, while the lock has been replaced. Inside, on the right-hand side, there are two and a half fixed shelves, and on the left-hand side, there is a hanging section. Delfino armchair by Erberto Carboni is a significant example of the so-called "organic" furniture, which develops in the 1950s and draws inspiration from the forms of nature. The Delfino armchair has a strong personality, with a very evident graphic sign, that makes it perfect for both home and hospitality space.

Designed by Erberto Carboni:
Graphic designer, poster designer and illustrator (Parma 1899 - Milan 1984). Graduated in architecture at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Parma (in 1921, earning an honorary diploma), he immediately started working as a graphic designer, opening a studio in his hometown (he developed advertising material for some local companies).
He also began to work as an illustrator, collaborating with some publishing houses in setting up the iconography of volumes of consumer fiction and beginning to work with some magazines, such as "Lidel", "Novella", "Dramma", "Emporium", "Le Grandi Firme".
In 1932 he moved to Milan, where he came into contact with Studio Boggeri and Olivetti Advertising...
