Mid-20th Century Israeli Kiddush Cup by David Heinz Gumbel
Located in New York, NY
Hand hammered silver plate Kiddush cup with applied Hebrew text: "Peace be within your walls". Signed on the bottom. Kiddush cup is a ceremonial vessel to hold wine for the blessing said at Shabbat and Jewish holidays meals. David Heinz Gumbel (given name was Detlev Heinz. He was born in Sinsheim, Germany to a secular family among the pioneers of the local silversmith industry. In 1918, the Gumbels relocated to Heilbronn where David worked as an apprentice in the "Bruckmann & Sons" factory, becoming a certified steel engraver. In the late 1920s, Gumbel studied to be a silversmith at the school of applied arts in Berlin at the Kunstgewerbeschule. Following his studies, Gumbel was employed at workshops in Düsseldorf and Stockholm, as well as in the family factory in Heilbronn. It was there that Gumbel began to design hand-made silver pieces in the modern style. Simultaneously, he produced Jewish ritual objects like a Chanukah menorah...

Early 19th Century Polish Brass Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Brass Hanukkah lamp Menorah, Poland, circa 1810. Cast in Bench form, on four feet. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring scrollwork. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps...

18th Century Galician Brass Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Cast brass Hanukkah Lamp, Galicia, 18th century. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring dense scrollwork. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. 19th Century Iraqi Silver Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Handcut strips of silver that have been bent into curvilinear shapes, with semicircle of candle-sockets, complete with drip-pans. A cast-made pair of birds, appearing to be ducks or geese, flank the servant light, while at top as the finial, a large casting of a hen or rooster. While this overall form of lamp is known as hailing from Iraq, we cannot locate any other Iraqi lamps featuring the animals displayed on our example. Birds such as peacocks were widely used in Iraqi and other Middle-Eastern and North African Chanukah lamps, however the usage of the animals featured on our lamp likely have more to do with the surrounding Islamic culture than revealing any meaning in Judaism, which is typical overall for many motifs found on Jewish ritual...

Late 18th Century Earthenware Hanukkah Lamp, Djerba, Tunisia
Located in New York, NY
A rare, late 18th century earthenware Hanukkah lamp from Djerba, Tunisia. Rectangular in shape, the Hanukkah lamp is supported by two legs. The oil fonts take the form of eight small recesses, with pinched edges on one side for wicks. Apparently, a servant light (now missing) was placed in the upper part of the lamp. This is a particularly rare and early specimen. In all likelihood, this model – undocumented in the literature – represents a missing link between the stone lamps used in North Africa and the more familiar earthenware lamps of Tunisia, which are generally glazed in a greenish hue (in similar fashion to the present lamp). But in the latter group, the oil fonts are elevated, that is, supported on top of small columns, and are similar in design to ancient earthenware...
