David Byrne, legendary frontman of American band The Talking Heads and author of How Music Works, was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1952. Byrne is a multi-intrumentalist most known for his high-energy performances and distinctive, wide-ranging voice. He formed The Talking Heads with fellow RISD student, Chris Frantz, and Frantz's girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, in 1975 while living in New York City. In 1990 he founded the world music record label Luaka Bop, which released music from artists including Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, and Zap Mama.
Byrne's solo career has been broad and multi-disciplinary. Since the 1990s, Byrne has exhibited his visual artwork at numerous galleries including Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City. In 2006 he released Arboretum, a collection of his philosophical drawings, published by McSweeney's. Byrne's drawings are what he calls "mental maps of imaginary territory." Says Byrne, "if you can draw a relationship, it can exist... the world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising." In 2010, Byrne exhibited his piece "Guitar Pedals...

Josef Albers from White Embossings on Gray Series, Print II
By Josef Albers
Located in Brooklyn, NY
“In order to use colour effectively it is necessary to recognise that colour deceives continually.” Josef Albers
“We never really perceive what colour really is, as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art.” Josef Albers
“The structures are irrational statements which illustrate the artist’s claim that the eye seeks, in endless exploration, to fathom and master the contradictions of reversed symmetry. One begins to study the structure at some point where isometric order is suggested. One finds evidence for the reading of the work, but when one tries to take in the whole structure as a unit, new evidence requires a drastic reorganization of the work’s implications. That which was above shifts to below, that which was negative becomes positive, that which was full becomes vacant, that which was in front has moved to the rear. Having found a balance, the eye’s testing...

Modern Northern European woodcut print Seven Sacraments '1935' by Edgard Tytgat
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Tytgat's style can be described as a simplification of reality with an intended naivety. He derived his inspiration mainly from daily life and incorporated these experiences in his own dream world. For the present lot Tytgat was inspired by the traditional seven sacraments in the Church: Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. Tytgat also references the Flemish tradition of visual representation of these sacraments that dates back all the way to age of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden...
