"White Horse" Frederick Lester Sexton, Bucolic Barn, Farm Scene, White Horse
By Frederick Lester Sexton
Located in New York, NY
Frederick Lester Sexton White Horse Signed lower right Oil on canvas 25 x 30 inches Provenance Part of a Collection received from the Lyme Art Association. Frederick Lester Sexton received a lot of reviews and exhibitions in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when he was at the height of his career. Because it captured the personal view of many people's wish to ignore national issues and simply live their lives in their homes, his work was favorably welcomed. The rise of modernist styles like Abstract Expressionism, which started to take over the American art scene in the 1950s, also contributed to Sexton's fall in popularity. As collectors and regular spectators discover once more that realism is a valid component of American art because it speaks directly and clearly to the beauty they perceive in their surroundings, many artists, like Sexton, are experiencing a renaissance. Cheshire, Connecticut, was the birthplace of Frederick Sexton in 1889. His father, J. Frederick Sexton, was the Rector of St. Peter's Church in Cheshire and a well-known Episcopal clergyman. The mother, Mary Louise Lester, was an amateur painter and came from a pretty well-known Hartford family. Frederick was killed in an open-hearth fire when he was eighteen months old. His right hand was badly burned and was never to be opened again. The father kept the family together after his mother passed away when he was nineteen. Sexton's mother taught him art, and he went to public schools in New Haven. He received the prestigious Winchester Prize for a year of study in Spain while attending the Yale School of Fine Art, where he studied under Augustus Tack...

NYC 1939 World's Fair Mural Study American Scene WPA Modern Mid 20th Century
Located in New York, NY
NYC 1939 World's Fair Mural Study American Scene WPA Modern Mid 20th Century Eugene Savage (1883 – 1978) 1939 World’s Fair Mural Study 45 x 30 inches Oil on Canvas Signed lower right The painting is part of a 1,000 piece collection of art and objects from the 1939 World’s Fair. The collection as a whole is available. Savage created the mural for the facade of the Communications Building. An image of the completed mural, along with a published postcard, is part of the listing. Note the center top female figure, she resembles the figure in the offered painting. BIO Eugene Francis Savage was born in Covington, Indiana 1883. He underwent various forms of art training in the early years. He was a pupil of The Corcoran Gallery and The Art Institute of Chicago, and was later awarded a fellowship to study in Rome at The American Academy. While under the spell of that ancient city the young artist began to render historic figures that were suitable for the classic style needed for mural painting in the traditional manor. During this period he was able to study and observe Roman and Greek sculpture, although much of the academic training was accomplished by using plaster casts along with the incorporation of live models. This method survived and was used efficiently throughout Europe and the United States. After leaving the Academy, Savage was commissioned to paint numerous murals throughout the United States and Europe. This artist received acclaim for the works he produced while under commissions from various sources. This young master was a contemporary of Mexican muralists David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974), Jose Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) and Diego Rivera (1886-1957). In this period he was to show the influence of his contemporaries in formulating a modern style. Savage also played a vital role in the WPA Federal Art program, and he was a member of The Mural Art Guild.. Savage was elected an associate member of The National Academy of Design in 1924 and a full member in 1926. From 1947, he held a professorship at Yale University where he taught mural painting, and some of his students went on to significant positions. By this time the artist had painted large-scale murals at Columbia, Yale University, Buffalo N.Y., Dallas, Texas, Chicago, Indiana, along with other commissioned works. He also achieved recognition for a series of murals commissioned by the Matson Shipping Line and completed around 1940. For this commission, Savage made many exacting studies of customs and folkways of the Hawaiian natives. However, the award-winning murals were not installed as planned but were put in storage during the war years when the ships were used for troop transportation and were in danger of attack. However the mural images were reproduced and distributed by the shipping company including nine of the mural scenes that were made into lithographed menu covers in 1948. The American Institute of Graphic Arts awarded certificates of excellence for their graphic production, and the Smithsonian Institute exhibited the works in 1949. Today Savages' Hawaiian Art production is held in high regard by collectors of Hawaiian nostalgia. In later years the artist focused his attention on a theme that dealt with the customs and tribal traditions of the Seminole Indians of Florida. He produced many variations of this theme throughout his lifetime, and the pictures were usually modest scale easel paintings, precise and carefully delineated. Many of these pictures incorporate Surrealistic elements and show some minor stylistic influences of the painters Kay Sage...

Pink Ball & Hook (Photorealist Oil Painting of Industrial Equipment on Blue)
Located in Hudson, NY
Vertical photo-realist painting on canvas of pale pink ball with steel colored hook on a bright sky blue background 72 x 36 x 1.5 inches oil on canvas, thin wood stripping signed "Richards" on bottom right corner in yellow paint wire is installed on the back for easy hanging This precisely detailed photo-realist painting was made by Joseph E. Richards in 1981. The artist painted this piece when he was 60 years old during a successful career painting trains, cargo ships, and industrial machinery. Richards served in the US Navy during WWII and went on to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia before showing with Ivan Karp of O.K. Harris Gallery in NYC. The artist moved upstate to Hillsdale, NY for the later years of his life. This painting captures one of Richards' most beloved subjects, close up views of industrial equipment against a vivid blue sky. With a photo-realist approach to the subject, Richard was able to capture detailed changes in light and shadow, shape and form. The pale pink colored ball and steel colored hook, down to each screw and bolt, is completed with extreme focus and precision. One could easily confuse this painting with a photograph since it was completed with a very smooth application of paint, with no texture built upon the surface. It is not until you examine the painting up close, do you realize the artist's calculated brushwork. The painting is framed with natural wood stripping. The work is lightweight and easy to hang with wire installed on the back. The artist's signature is located on the front and back of the canvas. About the artist: Joseph Richards’ precisely painted canvases of giant cranes, cargo booms, propellers and train engines are fueled with a fascination like that of a six-year old boy. Working directly from photographs, Richards unites light and color together as one element, evident in the reflective surfaces of steel. The otherwise mundane signs of corrosive wear are magnified; rust stains glow on the canvas and yellow painted pulleys radiate like beacons against a bright, blue sky. Richards finds beauty in their dramatic color, resilient texture, definitive form and functionality. Richards paints sections of these objects in grand scale, with canvases up to 6 feet long and eye-popping color, calling attention to their massive proportions and exceptional strength. Richards had solo exhibits in New York City, Scottsdale AZ, and Washington DC, and his work is found in private and corporate collections here and abroad, e.g., the Tucson Museum of Fine Arts, Mobil Oil, Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, and E. Jean Belloni in Geneva, Switzerland. Resume: Born in 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa, Joseph Richards left for Chicago after high school to pursue a career in art. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 – 1945, he went on to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He eventually settled with his wife, Betty, in New York City. In 1969, longtime dealer Ivan Karp opened The OK Harris Gallery on West Broadway in Manhattan’s SoHo. Karp was at the forefront of the Photorealism movement, showing artists such as Duane Hanson and Manny Farber...

"Mexican Villagers Scene with Man on a Horse" Expressionistic Style Oil Painting
By Michael Baxte
Located in New York, NY
A strong modernist oil painting depicted in the Mid Century by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his portraits in village landscapes with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. Art measures 25.5 x 21.25 inches Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century, it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City. Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. For the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher, he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into the imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient's light of science.” By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett...

Lovers Series No. 15
By George North Morris
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original oil on canvas painting from the estate of George North Morris from the artist's "Lovers" series. This piece comes in its original wood frame presentation. George North Morris - painter, writer, teacher Born May 13, 1915 in East Liberty, PA Died Oct. 1, 1996 in Hudson, NY Studio locations over the years: varied from Hyannis (MA), Providence (RI), Oglethorp (GA), Montpelier (VT), Yonkers & Westchester Co. (NY) to the later years in Germantown (NY). Subject matter consisted mainly of seascapes and landscapes but in the 60's and 70's he experienced his abstract era. The later years, in fact most of his life was spent in New England and N.Y. state. Most of his more valuable paintings where along the Hudson River and Westchester County. His most frequent methods were oils and water colors, and in the 1940' his artistic expression was through the use of clay. Most of his pottery was made from local Cape Cod (Barnstable) clay which he and his family dug, washed and prepared. He wrote a part of the foreward, called "The Tradition", for a book "A Century and a Half of American Art 1825-1975". Published in 1975 by the "National Academy of Design". He was also an art critic and reporter for the Worcester Telegram and the Provincetown New Beacon. He was a person that felt time was by far better spent talking about and hearing ideas and thoughts. The following are some of his. George Morris's life was that of art and art critic as well as educator. "It was the two summers, 1938 and 1939" recalled Morris, "that I really learned how to paint". Though much of his work showed a strong Edward Hopper influence, at the same time it took many roads. It was, over the years, much too varied to categorize. He started with collage, moved to abstraction, and then to a period during the late 1960s and '70s when he completed what he called his "Lovers Series" - erotic paintings filled with large orchestrated flat color - that show him moving away from abstraction. Upon becoming bored with the concept of abstract painting, he looked for new challenges in pastels, acrylics and water colors, painting once again what he called "the world as it is recognizable by others". George firmly believed that all the best artists are good hucksters, too. Solo exhibitions as a painter were as follows: Columbia-Greene Community College - 1985 Barrett House - 1985 Smith Gallery - 1980, '81, '82 Swansborough Gallery, Wellfleet - 1983 Hopper House, Nyack, NY - 1981 Hudson River Museum, Yonkers Shepherd Gallery...
