William Crovello Biography (written by Marshall Price, Nasher Museum Curator and former curator of the National Academy Museum):
Best known for his large public sculpture. New York City native William Crovello initially studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1947 to 1951. He entered the air force in 1952 and was stationed in Japan from 1954 to 1955. Following his military duty, Crovello, seeking his expressive muse, returned to Japan in 1957 for four years and became enchanted with the rich tradition of classical calligraphy. The artist absorbed both the deep philosophy and technical execution of the ancient script by immersing himself in calligraphic study.
After returning to New York in 1961, the artist moved to Spain in 1968 and shifted from painting to sculpture, creating forms whose presence activated three-dimensional space. His stone and metal works draw directly from the smooth strokes of the Japanese brush, echoing the graceful brevity and elegant fluidity of an ancient tradition. Lisa Meek’s sculptures, collectively titled Biblio Botany, possess a duality that is reflective of the artist herself and her eclectic range of interests. As a practicing medical professional with an inherent artistic drive, Lisa Meek has made impactful contributions to those she interacts with in both office and gallery spaces. The polarity of these worlds conglomerate beautifully, manifesting through her notable success in both fields. Lisa’s pursuit of a cosmetological career has always been paralleled with a desire to create, to utilize her artistic prowess in order to share her perspective and initiate important conversations. This desire has been integral to her experience since early adolescence, when she began acting upon her creative drive by depicting nature scenes.
The process in which Lisa assembles her sculptures is quite complex. In order to achieve depth and nuance, Lisa employs considerable intention throughout the planning process. With great admiration and ponder, Lisa cuts pages out of various literary works which highlight topics she wishes to discuss, human rights often being central. Attention to detail is vital; certain books possess qualities unsuitable for paint and shape manipulation. Every aspect of her work is deliberate; the symbolism associated with color and flower species, the pairing of literature, the minute details of shape and object placement. This layered production process exemplifies Lisa’s contemplative nature.

This charger plate by Voulkos features a Greek-influenced stylized birds and leaf design. Peter Voulkos is an American artist of Greek descent. The abstraction of animal and nature elements paired with the earthy, mottled gray and brown against brown background make this work beautiful. This work was featured in the exhibition "On Black Mountain: The Bauhaus Legacy in America", at the Sager Braudis Gallery (now Sager Reeves), in Columbia Missouri from April 5, 2019 to April. 27, 2019 and is reproduced in page 53 of the exhibition catalogue.

Born in 1924 to Greek immigrant parents in the town of Bozeman, Montana, Peter Voulkos is one of America’s most significant sculptors of the 20th century. Voulkos got his start in art in the late 1940s, when he was studying at Montana State College, Bozeman on the G.I. Bill, after being drafted and serving as an airplane armorer-gunner in the Pacific in World War II. In classes with Frances Senska, he discovered ceramics, the medium that would characterize his career. After graduating from Montana State College, Bozeman in 1951, Voulkos moved west and earned his MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California.
Returning to Montana after graduation, Voulkos attracted attention “as a prodigious natural potter and a producer of elegantly thrown functional earthenware,” according to Roberta Smith for the New York Times. He also produced dinnerware to sell through high-quality stores, and was noted for his wax-resist method of decoration.Voulkos gained a reputation as a master of ceramics techniques, winning twenty-nine prizes and awards from 1949 through 1955. However, a summer spent teaching at the experimental Black Mountain College (he was invited to teach at BMC by Karen Karnes) near Asheville, North Carolina in 1953 resulted in a dramatic shift in Voulkos’s artistic priorities, as well as his aesthetic. It was at Black Mountain College that Voulkos met Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Merce Cunningham and Charles Olson. He then visited New York City (as a guest of pianist David Tudor and Mary Catherine Richards) and encountered Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline—Abstract Expressionist painters who influenced the new direction Voulkos would go on to pursue.
In 1954, Voulkos was invited to teach at the Los Angeles County Art Institute (now Otis), and he established a new ceramics department and graduate program that attracted other young artists including John Mason, Ken Price, Billy Al Bengston and Paul Soldner. It was here that, inspired by the scale and spontaneity of the New York School, Voulkos began to build progressively larger works that cast aside utility and abandoned ceramic conventions. Decoration became aggressive, as he slashed at and pierced the clay, which he then energetically painted with glaze. Peter Voulkos exhibited these new works in shows at the Landau Gallery in Los Angeles, which announced to the world a new way of approaching ceramics.
Disagreements with the more conservative administrators of the LA County Art Institute led to Voulkos’s departure for the University of California, Berkeley, in 1959. While at Berkeley, Voulkos experimented with bronze and produced large-scale bronze sculpture, while continuing his ceramic work and doing demonstrations of ceramics throughout the U.S. In 1979, a young ceramist named Peter Callas...

Painter, architect, decorator, and sculptor, she was a friend of the Parisian, Modernist sculptors, Chana Orloff, Henri Laurens and the Martel brothers, to whom her work was often compared. The ingenuity of her models brought her great critical acclaim, but she seems to have stopped producing in the early 1930s. Her output, although fine, is rare. Claude-Levy’s gentle Cubism might be better described as Purism in sculpture. It is characterized by simplified surfaces, rounded (as opposed to angular) forms, and smooth, lustrous surfaces. The Purist movement included the painters Léger, Ozenfant and Le Corbusier in its ranks.
Claude-Lévy, along with other artists of the avant- garde living in the Gallic capital (Czaky, Zadkine, Archipenko, Lipchitz, Lambert Rucki Miklos, Nadelman, Vörös, Orloff) helped to develop a collective twentieth century figurative sculptural idiom that exploited the daring and rich possibilities of geometric abstraction.

Forrest Myers Biography:
An artist who greatly expanded the functional vocabulary of sculpture, Myer’s work is foremost, the result of his empirical explorations in materiality. For 40 years, he has been experimenting with the inherent properties of metal. The show will not only present his early dynamic pipe sculpture, his more austere flattened pieces made of oxidized steel plates, and his early woven wire “chairs” but will show for the first time, his most recent body of work including Parker and Vesuvio. The contemporary works, sculpted and intricately worked, are his most brilliantly complex to date.
Myers most popularly known work The Wall (1973) at the corner of Broadway and Houston is currently under reinstallation (it was disassembled in 1997 to utilize the wall for income-generating advertisements). Often called the “Gateway to Soho,” this long embattled sculpture—a vibrant relief commissioned to disguise steel joists jutting from the brick wall of a building at this intersection). It will now regain its place as the New York’s largest public sculpture.
