Neo-Renaissance Cabinet by G.F. Quignon, Universal Exhibition of Paris 1889
By Frederic Gustave Quignon
Located in PARIS, FR
Presented at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889
Important sculpted and engraved natural wood, patinated bronze and Griotte de Campan red marble inlaid Neo-Renaissance style cabinet.
The upper part is composed of a frieze of bronze medallions separated by triglyphs and supported by ribbed columns with Corinthian capitals. There are eight of these columns paired at the front and two simple columns at the rear. The facade presents an alternation of bronzes in niches and cartouches, of marble slates in cartouches sometimes flanked by palmettes, and of engraved motives of laurel and foliage scrolls. The upper part opens with three leaves and three mobile compartments. The belt carved with acanthus leaves opens with two drawers. This cabinet is supported by four richly sculpted tapered feet ending with claws. Four fluted pilasters are inscribed in the moulded back as counterparts. The whole ensemble stands on a moulded plinth and eight rounded feet.

Important Cabinet with Two Body in Blackened Wood Carved and Engraved
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
IMPORTANT CABINET WITH TWO BODY IN BLACKENED WOOD CARVED AND ENGRAVED
ORIGIN: FRANCE
PERIOD: 17TH CENTURY
Height: 188 cm
Width: 135 cm
Depth: 53.5 cm
Blackened wood and veneer: rosewood, ebony, pear, mahogany
Framed in oak wood
A real ceremonial piece of furniture, this two-part cabinet opens with two historiated panels and two drawers in the upper part and two leaves and two belt drawers in the lower part.
Richly worked, it offers both inside and outside a floral decoration, finely engraved which contrasts with the importance given to geometric lines. This duality, typical of this type of cabinet, confirms its dating and its origin.
In addition, the gilded metal locks and fittings enhance the sumptuous trait of this piece of furniture and also contribute to its ornamentation.
Furniture of predilection for “enclosing the most precious things” (Furetière, Dictionnaire, 1690) the appearance of cabinets in the 16th century accompanied the development of wunderkammern, these cabinets of curiosities enriched both by the vogue for the antique and by distant expeditions which bring back with them natural wonders and rare testimonies of distant civilisations. The curious, combining fortune and culture, brings together antique medals, rare plants, fossils, or oriental ornaments. This meeting of pieces which embodies much more than their material reality, a subjective evocation of all the riches of the earth and all the knowledge of men, acts in the eyes of its owner like a microcosm of which he is the master and which he enjoys according to his will.
This is how the first cabinets were designed to be transportable, often wooden structures calling for riches only those they housed for a collector who refused to part with them, even temporarily.
In the 17th century, the cabinet gained in technical complexity and luxurious materials until it could no longer be moved itself and became a prized and expensive collector’s item...

17th Century Antwerp Cabinet with Painted Panels Attributed to H. Van Balen
Located in PARIS, FR
This precious cabinet is one of the rare emblematic works of the city of Antwerp, produced in 17th century thanks to the collaboration between a painter and a cabinetmaker, and intended to adorn Kunstkammer (private museums) or art cabinets.
Our cabinet is decorated with 13 oil painted panels featuring mythological and allegorical subjects and perfectly reflects the Antwerp pictorial trend of the early 17th century. Definitely in the spirit of the times, where one of the roles of the kunstkammer (the room for which it is intended) is to be able to contemplate the world in all its aspects.
It opens with two doors revealing 10 drawers, 9 of which have painted panels on the front, a central door and an upper compartment, the interior of which is also decorated with a painted panel.
The left door depicts a subject from Roman mythology: Pomona and Vertumnus in the garden. The fruits and vegetables placed at the feet of Pomona evoke the allegory of summer and the abundance of nature.
While on the right door, under the airs of Venus and Love...

Exceptional Gaston Poisson & Robert Pansart Cabinet Lacquered Mahogany, Art Deco
By Atelier Pansart, Gaston Poisson
Located in Paris, France
This splendid and rare large furniture piece includes three doors with engraved signed keys from the artist Gaston Poisson, “GP”. This circa 1937 cabinet is made of green lacquered* mahogany and contains 12 interior shelves (three doors each with 4 shelves), each shelf featuring beautiful marquetry detail. The centerpiece of this beautiful cabinet is the large exterior mirror by Robert Pansart. This is made of "églomisé" glass with a polychrome geometric ribbon-like decor. Églomisé glass is a technique used often for mirrors that creates intricate decoration using golden leaves and silver.
*THE LACQUER IS NOT ORIGINAL, THE CABINET HAS BEEN REFINISHED LATE 20 CENTURY
Gaston Poisson, a cabinetmaker from Lille, France, is a renowned Renaissance designer best known for his modernist work. He has a unique taste for pure clean lines, mostly from the 1950s-1960s, which is exemplified in this particular piece.
The square and diagonal motifs visible on the facade of the cabinet as well as the ornate marquetry on the interior shelves show that this piece was highly specialized, a well thought out piece made with incredible care.
Robert Pansart is a French glassmaker and decorator who specialized in his unique technique of etching and oxidizing with “églomisé” glass. One of the most highly regarded glassmakers of his time, he mainly worked from post war years to the 1960s, and his work is reminiscent of a world based on fairy tales – evocative of the 1940s-1950s taste. His mirrors tend to appear in the antique art market and are valued as highly collectible pieces.
Pansart mirrors were auctioned at very high prices at auctions at Artcurial and other major auction houses (see the last picture)
