After moving to Paris in the early 2000's, mixing Pop Art and Street Art, he started painting on the walls of his Montparnasse neighborhood in Paris (famous in the 50's for being the gathering point of writers and painters i.e Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, Modigliani....). Very well executed portrait of Jacob Dolson Cox. See the sitter’s biography below. Signed top right and dated 1881. Relined canvas, very good condition. The portrait is housed in a contemporary replica of a period frame. Overall framed measurements are 33.25 by 28.25 inches. Provenance: A East Hampton, Long Island collector. Biography George Peter Alexander Healy was born in Boston on July 15, 1813, the first of five children of William Healy, an Irish immigrant and captain of a merchant vessel, and his wife Mary Hicks. Healy showed an early artistic interest: by 1830 the self-taught painter had opened a portrait studio from which he hoped to help to support his family. Although commissions were at first sparse, young Healy received important encouragement from Thomas Sully (1783-1872)) who advised him to make painting his profession. His fortunes also improved in 1831 when Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis, a leader in Boston society, granted him permission to paint her portrait and recommended his talents to other potential patrons. In 1834 Healy went to France where he studied with Baron Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835). A year later he traveled through Italy, visiting museums and churches in the company of Lady and Sir Arthur Faulkner who soon provided his introduction to London society. It was in England that Healy met and, in 1839, married Louisa Phipps. The couple settled in Paris where Healy embarked upon the beginning of a long and happy marriage and thriving career. His diplomatic and affable demeanor, together with his obvious skill, brought him tremendous success throughout Europe and the United States. Prolific, as well as talented, he had by 1867 produced more than six hundred portraits. The constant stream of commissions included dignified, imposing portraits of such celebrated figures as Pope Pius IX and Queen Elizabeth of Romania, the latter of whom developed a warm friendship with Healy and his family. Although Healy, sometimes accompanied by his wife, traveled to the United States several times during the 1840s and early 1850s, it was not until 1856 that the entire family settled in America. They took up residence in the booming city of Chicago, which Healy used as a base for his work in Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and other cities. Original screen print which would be considered a silkscreen or serigraph of a birds eye view of Herald Square in New York City at lunch time by the contemporary American artist, Jacqueline Fogel. Edition 3/15. Signed in lower right margin by the artist. Executed in 1988. Condition is excellent. Currently unframed. Professionally matted. Overall matted measurements are 14 by 11 inches. Framing options are available. Provenance: A Venice, Florida collector. This park was named for the newspaper that was once published directly to its north. The City of New York acquired the area in 1846 as part of the opening of Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway). By the early 20th century, many printers and publishers had located in the area. The New York Herald, founded by James Gordon Bennett in 1835, was best known for its sensational coverage of scandal and crime, and for its enormous circulation. Herald Square's centerpiece monument to Bennett and his son houses a sculpture and clock that formerly topped the Herald building. The bronze figures include Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and invention, and two bell-ringing blacksmiths. The clock and figures were installed on the monument in 1940, and blacksmiths "Stuff and Guff" or "Gog and Magog" have chimed the hours Born Oct. 13, 1928, in Brooklyn, as a child she showed a great interest in drawing. She attended the Philadelphia School of Art and maintained a career as an artist throughout her life. Impressed by the native American art represented in Kachina dolls, she developed a personal style in her 20s that always incorporated bright colors. Her work ranged from land and cityscape watercolors to small to life-size polychrome sculptures made almost entirely from discarded ornate furniture parts and other found or collected objects. In 2000, she was given the opportunity to create cow sculptures for the New York Cow Parade, and in 2002 she painted sculptures for the Rescue Dog book honoring the working dogs from Sept. 11, 2001. In 2005, her Big Apple sculpture was displayed outside Trump Tower. She swam regularly in Jamaica Bay and maintained an active and vibrant lifestyle throughout her life, attending many parties, art exhibits and concerts. Fogel's multifaceted planes which should recede far into the distance and give the illusion of depth because of their tonality and color intensity appear, instead, to be on the same plane. Because the depth of field is flattened, the color areas become rather decorative. In addition, the planes on the buildings are charmingly tilted and destorted, contributing to the zaniness and gaiety of these paintings. Fogel has a graceful sense of composition and her placement of shapes is always sound. The paintings, while they seem so effortless and unselfconscious, belie an unobtrusive and playful artistic intelligence. His work today is a culmination of many years of painting, thinking and experiencing. He blends urban street art with his background of typography, mixed media collage, and abstract expressionism into each of his urban pop expressionist works. The son of fine artist / commercial artist Harrison Allen, Mark learned a lot very early from his talented father. His think training also includes a bachelor degree in commercial art from Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. He continued study at Parson's School of Design in New York City where he had an apartment across the street from Andy Warhol's factory (they met in 1982.) He continued study later at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Allen is represented in galleries throughout the world. Museums he has shown in include The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum - Cleveland, OH; Experience Music Project - Seattle, WA; Memphis Brooks Museum of Art; Dallas Museum of Art, and Acadian Museum - Lafayette, LA. He was a major figure in the graphic design community for over two decades.
